Jim says:
Really? Wow. That's interesting. So much for feeling safe late at night, eh?
http://www.record-eagle.com/2002/apr/18otsego.htm
Sheriff James McBride, who was told to come up
with $57,000 worth of cuts or fee hikes, said he's beefed up traffic enforcement
and expects the department to issue 3,000 traffic tickets this year, compared
to 1,700 last year. That will bring in an additional $38,400, he said.
Jims ays:
Man. This just really pisses me off. "Geee we need to double our revenue. Write twice as many tickets!" What's that about?!?! I'm sorry but I think it's pretty damn bad that they can just raise fines and such any ol' time they feel like it. Raise taxes or something, but don't start badgering your citizens under the name of law enforcement. You just cause the people to not trust them.
DOWN WITH NEW ROME
Jim says:
They are lucky to have 60 people living there. Really only have 35-45 I bet. I wonder what happens if they didn't have residents any more? I'm sure the Police would fight to stay open. The would claim they are protecting that piece of Broad St. As for not responding to real crime you are right. That's something people who live in the are bring up. They feel safe with all the police. Talk about false sense of security. tsk tsk tsk
Meanwhile, keep up the good work and I hope the new mayor, the media, higher authorities keep on this one and finally bring down the corruption that has been New Rome's legacy for years.
Tom
Jim says:
Thanks Tom. I actually own that movie and it is what New Rome would be if they could get away with it.
Feel free to post a link!
Clyde
Jim says:
Thanks Clyde! I have also added you to the Supporters section.
Jim says:
I believe it. It's like give an inch, take a mile. The more they can get from us the harder they will squeeze.
Jim says:
People have a tendency to ignore facts if it goes against what they want to believe and then they attack with insults and childish behavior. Oh well. We will win in the end!
Tom
Jim says:
You are right. I wonder what it is about Ohio that we have such problems with traffic police? Yeah some states have a couple towns that do it, but Ohio has a lot of towns that do it! Every little Village or town seems to run off their traffic fines.
Jim says:
Ouch! I feel bad for people who just visit and get stung there. Just no sense in it.
Jim says:
We need to get Cops to go in an sit with the New Rome PD. What an episode that would be!
Robin Hood
Jim says:
It would be nice, but the council hires a solicitor. The Mayor doesn't have a lot of power in most things.
Note: If you are going to engage in this type of fun. Make sure you don't do anything else that might get you pulled over.
Jim says:
Oh that is great! Surprised they didn't pull you over anyway just to give you a hard time.
Article IV reads “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” When walking through the three blocks of Nazi Hell, the hell that makes up New Rome, I didn’t feel very secure in my person in not being searched without reasonable cause.
No sir, there is a lot more involved here then a stupid speeding ticket.
While the marches are fun I think we are pointing our wrath at the wrong people. Sure, Lt. Cunningham and members of the police state are jerks but what about the people who allow this fraud to perpetuate?
Might I suggest you lift your sights up a little to members of the judiciary who are elected to various offices that Franklin voters can control? O’Brien has known of this sham for years and hasn’t done a damn thing to put a stop to it. It is time he must go! Any judge that finds anyone guilty of a New Rome speeding violation needs to be turned out of office.
Think about it, there is a lot more sense here then you think. Sometimes the office for prosecutor, or a judgeship, can rest in a handful of votes. It does not take a stretch of the imagination to envision a site like newromesucks.com being able to actually call an election!
I read you were complaining O’Brien wasn’t paying
attention? Take this tact and I can guarantee to you he will start
paying very close attention.
Jim says:
You are 100% correct. It is up to the people of Franklin County to remove those that do not answer our cries of help. I think many people in the State have ignored us long enough. We need to start putting pressure on these people to take action and make laws that actually work for us.
Jim says:
I was thinking of that. It's certainly something to explore for those with disabilities. Anyone out there have any ideas?
Question: If the New Rome officials were
not legally seated, then New Rome Mayor's Court probably wasn't legally
convened. If, without a legal Mayor, Mayor's court wasn't legal,
then wouldn't all jugements including uncontested tickets during the illegal
years be null and void? And shouldn't all fines and costs illegally
accessed during that time be ordered returned to the defendents--with interest?
And wouldn't that be enough to bankrupt New Rome? If not, wouldn't
the former
defendents (victims) be entitled to other damages?
Jim says:
That would be nice, but there are legal loopholes. From what I understand it's like this: Since they were acting in that position and hadn't been question then they were legally serving. Sounds odd to me, but like I said: The law protects the bad people more than the good.
As for legal advice people can also join a Prepaid Legal Service for only 20.00 a month and get 24 hr legal advice and service..

Jim says:
Thanks for your support Susan! The march was great and I hope you can make it to the next one.
Jim says:
Thanks for your support Mike. It's really too bad there isn't an external agency that would conduct some sort of internal investigation again the New Rome Police. I think the results would be interesting.
Brett
Jim says:
Good to know! Thanks!
Most of New Rome's Cops are eiter part timers or freebies who if they are required to appear in downtown court will fast become frustrated. If New Rome has to Take their precious Lt off the streets to act as a Court Officer oh well that 's one less out there to write tickets. Or if Cunningham has to act on New Rome's behave there goes his cushy little $20,000 for 8 hours work.
NO ONE should agree to appear in the Mayor's Court this puts the POLICE at odds with their own system and puts the magistrate out of a job and that is the START of the FINISH for New Rome
Robocop
Jim says:
That is what everyone seems to say. If you take it to Franklin county then even if you are found guilty New Rome doesn't get the money. Though I have heard that some of the people who go to Franklin Country end up getting their cases dismissed.
Robocop
Jim says:
I doubt ODOT does anything to them. Too many placed view them as a little town that doesn't need to be bothered with. I think that is why they have got away with it for so long. Keep us updated on what ODOT says.
I support your cause. You have my expressed permission to use my name in any petition against NRPD. Wannabe's like these give REAL cops a bad name. Dissolve the village! Who do these politicians think they are, Congressman???
Anthony
Jim says:
Thanks for your support. Unfortunately no number of names or angry Franklin Country residents can force a change in New Rome. It's going to require state intervention for anything to happen since we aren't New Rome voters and they aren't hurting the important people of the county/state.
Officials who are involved in situations as in New Rome (extraordinary policing in small jurisdictions in lieu of property taxation) are a puss to our society. In each such instance, they and their activities need to be fully exposed to the light of day. In many cases, records concerning the payment of fines are lost and so is the cash. There can be little doubt that many public officials in small town, traffic trap jurisdictions have illegally absconded with money, but so few are caught and prosecuted that most such people probably feel quite secure.
In my opinion, thieves don't deserve to walk the streets... let along patrol them or preside over Traffic Court. Thieves belong behind bars and anyone who is caught using police authority or public position to further his/her own personal financial interest deserves to spend a lot more time in jail than the average criminal. Corrupt public officials need to be ferreted out, exposed for what they are, aggressively prosecuted and incarcerated. An example needs to be set.
You're to be commended for exposing New Rome's mayor's court. If there's any justice in the world, they'll lose their jurisdiction over their little piece of pavement on West Broad Street. If New Rome loses it's cash machine, the party will be over. The good citizens of New Rome can then auction off their fleet of police cars, arsenal of radar guns and reams of unused ticket forms and pay property taxes to support their community just like the rest of us.

Jim says:
I think the Franklin County PA needs to sit in on the Mayors Court and see what it's all about. It's horrible.
I am a retired Chief of Police with 40 years in law enforcement. I agree that New Rome is out of control. The procedure seem somewhat strange also. This type of an operation would not have existed in my department nor the department of any other Chief that I know.
However, after reading many of the "tales of woe", I find that every one was actually in violation of the law. For example, expired license, no Ohio license after one year, failure to appear for court and on and on. One wonders whether the anger expressed in properly directed. It is directed at the N.R.P.D. for catching the violator. Should not the violator accept some responsibility for failing to obey the law?
My main reason for this e-mail is to take exception to one of your comments. You have called for Federal Authority to oversee local police. This is a horrible thought. The Federal Government is unable to do anything correctly. Just look around. This week the I.N.S gave visas to the terrorists who flew the planes on 9/11. I.N.S. did not even know who the terrorists were after 6 months.
Further, any such authority would fall under the Justice Department. The very same people who brought us Ruby Ridge, Waco and Little Miami, Florida.
There is sufficient control on local police by the local City or Village Council, the Mayor and /or Director of Public Safety Those people have the power and authority to make policy for the village. They must, in this case, accept or condone the actions of the police. Should the Citizens of New Rome cease to accept this policy, they have the power to eliminate this problem at the next election
You site will assist in putting pressre on the Council.
Sincerely,
Tom
Jim says:
Tom,
Yes some of the people in the Tale of Woe broke the law. In the case of New Rome it's often their methods and practices that has everyone so upset. They use the reason of "enforcing the law" for their own gains and benefits. Yes all governments do to an extent which is why police departments have quotas on the number of ticket their officers hand out. I'm sure if any police department wanted to double their revenue they could hand out twice as many tickets. Why don't they? Why doesn't the Columbus Police Department have 170,000 police out patrolling the street for every little breaking of the law? Simple. We don't need it and if they did you would have a VERY unhappy populous who would eventually revolt. The law is in place to make sure people don't hurt/wrong others through some means and not to constantly breath down your neck to make sure you're being good. New Rome is in fact breathing down peoples necks and that is the real problem. Any number of times a day most people break "the law" and get away with it because they didn't do it in a way that they caused a problem. If you run across Broad Street during rush hour and a cop sees you they will most likely stop you. If you do it at 3am on when there is no traffic and a cop see you they will most likely ignore you. New Rome makes it their norm to ticket people period. They are not doing it for the good of the community and they are not protecting anyone with their actions. I won't even go into the way their court in ran.
Having the Federal Government oversee it may be extreme, but something needs to be done in all states so they these agencies are monitored on some level. They expect New Rome to monitor itself. That's like telling a group of children to make sure each other behaves and doesn't get into the cookie jar.
There may be enough control over cities and such, but small communities can pretty much so what they want with no fear of recourse. If Columbus did what New Rome the people of Columbus could make change. What happens when a place like New Rome abuses the people of the surrounding areas and their people won't make a change because the amount of people is so small that they are in on it or they just don't care because it doesn't affect them? We are back to the children watching themselves. Isn't it odd that the most corruption of this nature seems to be coming out of the small Villages and such?

Jim says:
I personally have not contacted them. I'm just a bit discouraged by the response we have gotten from our county and state agencies and figure we would get even less of a response from them.
Jim says:
That's funny. I'm sure when they have their little badges on they think they can be rude to anyone. I would love to knock the chip of any one of their shoulders.
I'm a long-time Westside resident and I commend
you for your efforts to fight the horror that is New Rome, the only town
in Franklin County worse than Valleyview. I think that I have a new
motto for your organization. When ancient Rome fought Cathage during
the Punic Wars, the Roman senator Cato the Elder ended every speech with
the phrase "Cathago delenda est."
("Cathage must be destroyed.") I think
that the Latin phrase "Nova Roma delenda est!" ("New Rome must be destroyed!")
sums it up very nicely.
What's more, the citizens (i.e., inmates) of
New Rome won't be able to realize that they are being insulted.
Vale,
William
Jim says:
I think Valleyview is just a speed trap from what I have heard. New Rome is much more from what I gather. I'm sure that Valleyview has potential to be another New Rome though.
Nice motto! I'll make it the Motto of the Day. Thanks!
I attended OSU, then lived in Victorian Village for many years until about 5 years ago, when family business beckoned me back to my lovely hometown of Dayton (a town which merits its own website for the disenchanted). Anyway....I still tune in to WTVN on occasion to hear what is going on over there and I heard about your website.
While I have never had any personal experience with the local gendarmes of New Rome, I worked at a state agency with a real piece of work who was proud to call New Rome her hometown. If this mullet-wearing, tooth-missing, daddy sleeping with hillbilly was any indication of the attitudes prevailing there -- YIKES. One particular comment that comes to mind was that she preferred the swimming pool there as opposed to the luxurious one on the Hilltop, because "they don't got no nig**ers" there". And boasted of being a one-time cheerleader at West HS (LOL), and regularly brawling with the cheerleaders from East & other "black schools".
Ah yes, I miss Columbus...
Kay
Jim says:
You're not the first person to say some of the New Rome people aren't exactly tolerant of other races and I wouldn't be surprised. On the other hand I wouldn't say they are all like that because there are always exceptions to the rule. New Rome has a swimming pool? Maybe the kiddy pool in her front yard! She really was on drugs.
First thing, I am very pleased to see a website created on this matter. I only wish I knew of the protest today and could have joined. I do have a great idea and I do not know why anyone hasn't brought this up before. I am an independent associate of Pre-Paid Legal Services Inc (PPL). I will refer you to my website, I wish for you to thuroughly review all the information there. There is a way to protect our justice.
A PPL plan that covers the entire family under
the roof is only $26/mo!!! That provides you with a Lawyer when needed
w/o the $200-$600/hr bill. The lawyer provided by your PPL plan is
no rinky dink lawyer either, PPL provides legal coverage from only
the top law firms. My most important point is you will have what
is called "Legal Shield", which if ever pulled over and you feel
is unjust, you show the police officer your Legal Shield card.
That will let them know you are represented
by a lawyer and you know your rights and will
use them. With NRPD I think this would be very very effective.
Not even the fact that they would 9 times out of ten let you go with no
charge because they know they couldn'd mess with you, but if however you
were maybe speeding by a little..... you take it to court and i garuantee
with New Rome's track record of BS! your lawyer would eat them alive.
Many have lawyers already, but still to use their services some folks like
me could not afford them, thus giving up our rights because we can't afford
to fight for them.
PPL was created souly for the reason to give Justice back to the people, and making it affordable so it would be more than possible. Visit the website, www.prepaidlegal.com/go/cwellman , after thurough research yourself, you will see the great impact this can have with our fight against injustice, and afterwards that you see it is fit for the situation, posting it on your website to help others.
I look forward to hearing from you and hope this really helps to tell them to kiss your new romie ass!
Thank You for puting this small cold war into action.
Corey
Jim says:
Wow, this is a great idea. I certainly could have made use of the services several times. Legal insurance. Good idea!
Jim says:
Those are all good questions. I'm sure if you asked them they would blow you off and tell you that they did it all as they are suppose to. New Rome towing probably gives them kickbacks for using them as their impound so they get special privileges.
I heard you on the Saturday morning show on 610 as you were talking about the March in March picketing of New Rome and the website. Wish I had known of it sooner or else I would have tried to be there. Please let me know how it went.
BTW, have you ever considered talking to the local chapter of the Libertarian Party about this? Maybe you can get whatevere help you need from them too.
Take care,
Jeremy.
Jim says:
The march was great! It could have been warmer, but I guess you can't have everything. There are pictures on the front page if you click the march banner. It was a very good time.
I haven't contacted them. I don't even know what the Libertarian Party is. I will have to look into it, thanks.
J. J. J.
Jim says:
That would be too funny. It would be heavy as heck too!
J. J. J.
Jim says:
I wouldn't put it past them to do something like that.
Jim says:
Unfortunately Jamie has his hands tied in a lot of ways though I think he could do more. He is just being cautious I guess. Start trying to change the system too much and it may work against him.
Jim says:
It's unfortunate they have been overrun by greed and corruption. I have always liked the idea of a small town where people know each other. I'm sure New Rome would run the empire as long as they got a cut. I'll bring it up at the town meeting! heh heh Ok maybe not. Don't want to give them ideas!
