Jim says:
I bet! I remember there was a bike convention of some sort in town and a bunch of bikers driving down Broad Street! I bet they didn't pull any of them groups over. They probably soiled their pants and stayed out of site.

I thought so. Dave
Jim says:
Hey Dave! It was good seeing you at the march and I hope your hunting goes well in New Rome. There is a big selection and they sure don't hide.
It seems that a number of complaints have been submitted by individuals that feel they have been wronged. If I am not mistaken all complaints must be filed in a personnel file. Each and every employee of New Rome must have a file for, if nothing else, payroll tracking. And this file is open to examination by anyone who wishes to review the records of any employee because it is public record. At any time anybody can walk in and demand to review all of the personnel records for the village.
I don't know if it will make a difference but it may turn over a couple of stones and give a little ammo for the fight. Keep up the fight!!!! Justice must be served!!!!
Ricky
Jim says:
I doubt they have record for their staff. Heck, they can't even keep accounting records! The chief admits that if someone files a complaint it is disregarded unless it is done in person. It's like complaining to the King about the King! Who do they think they are fooling?
Jim says:
We could get COPS to sit with them and film. What an exciting episode that would be! I think people should write into The Columbus Dispatch. You can do it online if I'm not mistaken. Keep the pressure on them.
Jim says:
Thanks for your support William. I'm glad you didn't have to experience a New Rome ticket. It can be a very unpleasant experience as you may have read. New Rome gets like 95% of their budget from tickets and it's not illegal to do so in Ohio yet. The state/county frowns on it, but doesn't stop it. As for laws to protect us they don't exist. I showed them the Ohio Revised Code saying that if a sign isn't in proper view it can't be enforced and they said their sign was fine. How's that for justice. I think most of out law enforcement agencies in Franklin County does good work. It's always the bad apples that spoil the barrel.
I spent the first eighteen years of my life in that shithole (actually, I lived on Pasadena Avenue, which is technically not in New Rome, but in the Little Farms subdivision--whatever).
I am now a public defender in California. I can tell you that my career path had more than a little to do with the police in New Rome. They were abusive, arrogant, and incompetent. Ironically, it was only after I spent a couple of years doing criminal defense work out here that I realized not all cops are like that.
Good luck on your march tomorrow. Please keep the website current--it cracks me up.

Jim says:
Thanks Suzy! That's a great story! always does me good to hear of someone getting out of the boondocks to be successful. Not that you couldn't have done the same here. Just living here in Columbus all my live has made me more than a little jaded with it.

Jim says:
Good thing they got that speed demon off the road, eh? I would believe just about anything at this point. I often have joked that if I ever won a large amount of money I would buy all the houses in New Rome and do just that. I'm sure the PD would still try to operate even with no Village to protect.
Jim says:
Ahhh if only that were true. I have gotten a couple emails from people who claim to live on the west side and go through New Rome all the time and never gets pulled over. So we must just deserve it is what they tell me. I thank you for your support and I do think most people are with us on this.
Jim says:
Thank for your support RJ. They seem to think they own that part of Route 40. They may as well set up a toll booth. Remember the story Three Billy Goats Gruff? We need a really big billy goat to come knock the mean ol' troll out of the picture.
well thanks, and good luck.
anne
Jim says:
We handed out a flier like that of some sorts. For the most part you have to break some big laws in order for them to arrest you for a protest since it's our right. While it is true that for the most part they don't give a damn about our rights, they would have a lot of heat doing anything to anyone with the media right there in their face. Even the one guy they tried to give crap to was let go because the smarter of the two cops told him to just let him go.
Love the detail you guys have done.New Rome is
an embarrassment to all of Columbus and Franklin County and the State of
Ohio.Ive never have gotten a ticket but Im sure one day Ill get one.I have
seen New Rome Police as far as Georgesville and Broad, and if you look different
or dont like the vehicle your driving they will follow people just for
intimidation purposes alone.I have also seen them as far west where the
current New Krogers store is.Giving people tickets and such not just one
time but at least 2 dozen times over the course of one year.We the people
of this side of town need to start a refredendum to oust New Rome and have
it completely DISSOLVE,and incorporated into Columbus. If the 111 people
of New Rome dont like it then let them move some where else.WE THE PEOPLE
have the say so and the power and NEED to HAVE our VOICES heard an ACTION
TAKEN.They the so called city council cant even decide who is Mayor or
on the Council, how can they even think they can even run a village. They
are TERROIST (NRPD)and use every tactic possible. They just need to be eliminated
permanetly by voting no need for violence. There has to be a loop hole some
where in the law to close them down.I dont care what kind of awards they
have gotten over the years. For all I no they could of lied on paper to
get what they wanted all these years. They probably have no checks and balance
procedure and if they do Im sure there is two sets, since it is very well
known fact they are CORRUPT in EVERYWAY.Its to bad I have to work Saturday,
I do back you guys and anyone else in this adventure.I believe this protest
should be held every Saturday for as long as possible
Larry
Rangers lead the way/82nd all the way
Jim says:
I wish there was a loophole to shut them down. I believe the people of Franklin County should be able to vote them away. If they can affect our life we should be able to affect theirs in numbers. This would be a good way to tell what we think of their tactics.
Good luck tomorrow - and above all - have fun! Maybe I will drop by!

I heard about your cause on WBZX (99.7 Blitz) this morning on my way to work, and then just a few minutes ago again on WBNS (10TV).
Just thought I would drop this note and say ‘Keep up the good work!!’

Jim says:
A job that makes you drive through New Rome. Ouch. That's got to be a high stress job there! Heaven forbid your headlight go out while you're working!
Jim says:
Thanks for your support Rick. This whole problem has grown to much more than my traffic ticket. I am a firm believer in putting an end to corruption and abuse. This is what New Rome thrives on and I will not be happy until it is gone.
Good luck with your case, the class-action suit, and the March on New Rome tomorrow (I'd go, but I have to work). And for now, I'll sign this
A Future New Rome Victim-
Erin
Jim says:
That is the section to avoid Erin. When I started this site I expected to get message from people who had been ticketed in the same way I had. I never dreamed I would hear stories of mental and physical abuse as I have received. It only makes me more determined to end it. Some people don't understand why I am continuing the fight and think I should "move on". I don't understand how some people can turn a blind eye to such a place as New Rome.

Jim says:
Good stuff to know! Thanks!
I just visited your site when I saw the URL in the Cols. Dispatch.....I think its terrific!
I have lived here on the Westside all of my life, and boy could I tell some stories. I actually know for a fact that most if not all of the council and all previous mayors out there are related by blood or marriage, and its been that way for 30 years at least.
Once, years ago, I stopped in the bar out there looking for a friend I was supposed to meet. I stayed for one beer (only one of the day) and left. When I got to my car in the lot, it was blocked by 2 new rome (capitalization purposely left out) police cars, and they were basically searching my car. They said it had been there all day and the chalk marks on the tires proved it, they showed me where one of them supposedly marked my tire nearly 8 hrs prior. In reality, the car was there maybe 15 minutes, and when it was supposedly marked, it was really on a jobsite in southern Delaware county.
Even though I never even tried to get in my car that had only been there 15 minutes, and the hood was still warm, they made me do those bogus tests. So here I am with a very thin coat on in 15-20 degree weather, wearing new cowboy boots walking a line on 2 inches of ice.........naturally you can imagine how that went.
I was arrested and placed in a cruiser (to this day I don't know what the charge would have been) and they called the mayor on the radio to run a check on me. Just to show how crooked they are (more so) the Mayor at the time was a personal friend of mine, and as soon as he recognized my name, they were ordered to let me go with no further harassment. He even said that if I really was drunk, to escort me out of the village........which didn't happen, because they knew I was not drunk, and it was all a scam.
Back then the drill was $ 500 to get out of an OMVI in the mayors court instead of having it transferred to the Franklin County courts, which is mandatory today, so they have switched to even more pettiness to make up the difference.
It seems to me that over the years, through countless administrations in new rome, the one common denominator has always been the chief of police. That man has been involved with EVERYTHING in that burg for 25 years that I know of. I kinda think that he is the key to all the corruption that goes on, or at least knows every detail.
Im sure the pertinent thing to do would be to
disband the village, but even this Ron O'Brien is dragging his feet on
it....it seems that when a government agency needs some policing, they
always take their good ole time on it. Corruption in the private sector
is dealt with swiftly and sometimes harshly (depending on whose friend
it is.)
We all know we have different sets of rules for
folks and different ways of applying them........it all depends on who
you are, as to what punishments if any will be dealt.
I wish you luck.
Jim says:
There are several people who think that Chief Cunningham is one of the bad seeds. I certainly wouldn't be surprised. From everything I have read about him he needs to go, but it appears it is very hard to fire anyone from that Village. I don't understand this. I bet if they get a good honest Chief in there the PD would get cleaned up real quick.
Jim says:
Don't insult hillbillies like that! They are greedy bastards. There is a difference. I happen to be part hillbilly and wouldn't run a Village like they do.
I am not sure how they got away with it for so long. It really baffles the mind when you read all the horror stories. I wish it was as easy as running them out of town.
Jim says:
Thanks for your support. There are police abusing the system all over. The whole law system need an overhaul. The way it currently is the wealthy people are more likely to get away with bad things. This bothers me. I think everyone should get equal treatment in the eyes of the law. Maybe someone should make thelegalsystemsucks.com.
Don
Jim says:
Thanks for your support Don. Canton? Wow. I am impressed with the wide area that was reached.
New Rome is sounding like it is almost as bad as The City of Columbus! A columbussucks site would be neat.
DON
Jim says:
Thanks for your support Don! This would be a columbussuck.com if they did to me what New Rome did.
Heard about it on both WTVN-610AM and QFM96, WLVQ - 96.3 FM
Keep Up the Good Work!!
Roger
Jim says:
Thanks for your support Roger. Wow! That's a lot of stations! I only told 610. Thanks to anyone who promoted the march!
Jim says:
He has been chief there for a really long time and running the JUMP camp. Other than that I don't know. Maybe Taco Bell? Heck I would work 4-8 hours a week for $10,000 a year!
We used to have this problem in Texas until a state law was passed prohibiting ticket revenue from being over a certain percentage of the city revenue. This shut down the speed traps that little towns lived off of. Sounds like Ohio could benefit from a similar law.
Go Bucks.
Don in Dallas
Jim says:
When I found out how long New Rome has been doing this I was amazed. When the stories of their abuse came rolling in I was even more amazed.
They certainly do need a law like that in Ohio and in every state. New Rome needs to be made to pay for their wrongs too.
Just a quick note to say that I found your website today (through a link in a Columbus Dispatch on-line article) and loved it! Thank god I don't have any personal tales to tell, but at the ripe ole age of 29, I have heard New Rome horror stories all my life! I live in a little burg called Plain City. Ever since I can remember, we actually called our town cops 'New Rome rejects'. Pretty bad, huh?! They're notorious for really stupid things.
We had one cop while I was still in high school that literally fell asleep behind the wheel of the police cruiser while on duty - might not have been so bad if he wasn't parked right on main street! He's the same officer that was so overweight (I hope that's politically correct enough) that he got stuck (yes, seriously) behind the wheel once and couldn't get out after pulling someone over - he eventually let them go (this was a friend of mine). They are also good at ticketing for yellow lights.
A few years ago, I pulled out of a pizza shop
parking lot after picking up an order and headed west on 161 out of town
and toward home. Not 30 yards away from the pizza place, one of our
cops pulled me over. His only 'excuse' was that I had gone, get this,
not left of center, but right of the white line! He then wanted to
know where I had been. Told him the pizza shop. Wanted to know
if I'd picked up an order, told him I had, so he wanted to see it!
So I offered him a piece of the pizza on the front seat beside me.
He then proceeded to tell me he thought maybe I had been drinking.
What a moron! He had sat in the parking lot across the street from
the pizza joint and watched me pull out before pulling me over. This
is a place that doesn't even serve alcohol!! Guess I was a little
too 'smart' for him because he then told me to have the alignment on my
92
Bronco checked and let me go - no warning or
ticket. I found out later that they had done this to several other
people that same week.
Anyway, I would LOVE to join your march this saturday, but will be unable to. However, my thoughts are definitely with you! Way to go! Stick to your principles!
Toni
Jim says:
Great story Toni! Ticket at a yellow light. That's another one I would fight! I heard Columbus Police Trainers threaten their men with working for New Rome to motivate them. I would love to hear that!
I am also an ex-auxiliary Sgt. for the Columbus Police Dept. Do you know the questions to ask the officer in court about the methods of detecting speed, his certification, if radar was used-the units calibration and certification?
As a side note, are you also aware that Chief Cunningham is a convicted felon. He was arrested, convicted, and did time for auto theft when he was 18. He had that expunged from his record.
THANKS,
David
Jim says:
Thanks for your support David. I hope New Rome never decides to get you. I would hate to have you mail me a T.o.W. People have mailed me about what to ask an Officer. My problem is I'm not much of getting up in front of people and talking. I now know I should have had a lawyer in appeals court. It's not a mistake I will ever make again!
They exist only to line someone's pockets since they doe no snow removal, they install no sidwalks curbs or gutters and provide no services. By the way speaking of the sidewalks along this eyesores strech of W Broad St I hop no one trips and twist an ankle or worse in the March tomorrow. It would be terrible to have to sue the village because they did not make sure the sidewalks were safe. So be careful !!!
New Rome has no reason to exist and has got to go.
Terry
Jim says:
Right on Terry! The State should have the power to dissolve Villages based on their population. I think the population is a good indicator of the Villages well being. New Rome's population have been declining for a long time. Are they still going to be allowed to exist when the population is outnumbered by the NRPD? How about the businesses? The only one making serious money is the NRPD! The legit business who can't force customers to pay suffer.
When I read today's Dispatch article about the Protest March, I cheered! Then I saw that you had set up a "New Rome Sucks" website and had to check it out. As incredible as so many of these stories are, I'm simply not surprised. As far as I'm concerned, New Rome is not a municipality... it is a scam, and at $400,000 per year, a very lucrative one.
You have embarked on a very noble cause,so... GO GET THEM, GENTLEMEN!
David
Jim says:
Thanks for you support David. Points not appearing on records seem to be the norm for New Rome.
Jim says:
Thanks for your support! John from about.com is a great guy. I think he dislikes New Rome as much as I do. I just wanna know what will happen to us when New Rome is gone? Maybe we could start a movie review show. "Movie Time with John and Jim" Maybe not. I don't think we will be going anywhere soon.
Lima
Jim says:
Thanks for your support. Everyone can be like me. I'm an average Joe really. Perhaps I have an overdeveloped sense of justice, but that's about it.
They meet to review rules and make change recommendations. I would bet that if public pressure was applied about how New Rome ran tags at the redlight they would come up with a way to put a stop to this since it if made public statewide might reveal abuses in other areas of the state by other small ticket happy towns.
This would hopefully result in the removal of New Rome's Leads access. It is odd that New Rome even has a Leads terminal or access and I would bet that the "dispatchers" they are using are not Leads Certified thus this alone would result in the suspension or removal of their Leads Terminal.
Can you find out if they have a Leads Terminal and if they do I will take it from there and raise enough questions with The State Patrol they will have to start an investgation or end up embarrassed. I can operate a Leads Terminal and at one time was Certfied by the State patrol as Required BY LAW. Something New Rome knows nothing about "THE LAW" that is.
Robocop
Jim says:
Well they do have Leads certificates all over their wall when you walk in the trailer. I did notice that. Though I do think they abuse the system. I'm sure they would tie a camera into it so they could monitor everyone on foot too if they could.
Jim says:
I haven't really been through Powel, but I have heard some people complain about it. I think Ohio needs to address these problems.
Jim says:
This is a good idea. If we get them swamped with thousands of complaints they have to listen and do something about it.
While I blame the extortionists in New Rome the most, I also blame our State Legislature for allowing this modern-day highway robbery to contine. The State is sovereign and could stop this travesty if they would get off their rusty, dusty rear ends long enough to do so!
I have NEVER participated in any march before but will participate in this one no matter what weather confronts us. Your web site is appreciated and I heard about it on WTVN radio. I look forward to meeting a lot of New Rome haters tomorrow!
James
Jim says:
I just avoid driving through all together. Stopping you because you license plate light is too dim is good enough reason for them to give you a ticket.
Thanks for your support and I hope to see you when we next march.
Best of luck on your march today. I hope you embarass the crap out of them. Of course it is hard to insult that type.
Maybe they should replace their department insignia with a swastika. They sure sound like fascist pigs to me.
Hey! Reminds me; remember the pigs of the sixties? Maybe it was New Rome police.
Jeff
Jim says:
Thanks! Everything was great! Hmmm..we should ask them to put on their gas masks for a group photo.
Jim says:
Wow. Mass traffic tickets! That is new one! Yes it is "speeding" but officers can use discretion. If the word of the law was so strict why not put speed detectors on all of our cars and links them to a GPS and ticket us every time it notices we are speeding. Yeah, I am sure they will try that some day. A car rental place already did! Believe it or not the government made them stop.
The march? I, my wife and three children will be there Jim, and support US (the people) all the way!!!!
John
Columbus West Side
Jim says:
I sure wouldn't have been surprised if they had be on "high alert" I have heard several stories from people who think they were profiled. Again, this doesn't surprise me. Nothing they do would. Well short of closing down.
