Tales of Woe
Page 3
Hi Jim, My name is Steve I am been a west sider
for about 8 years now. I want to say great job on the web site I work in
the computer field also, so if you are looking for possible space to host
you web page let me know or a mirror site, Free of Charge, This past weekend
my girlfriend was driving through New Rome. She drove past a NRPD but he
didn't pull her over at that time he wait till she came back, Didn't have
a reason to pull her over other then the Registered Owner of the Car has
a Temp License must have someone 18 years or older in the car with her. (My
G/F has had a license for 10 years when she moved here from VA beach it expired
and that is why she had a temp license Little back groud Info). He said he
got her description but I don't understand how because she was sitting down
in a car in Moderate traffic there is know way he could have seen her and
had enough reason to pull her over.
So my Girl friend calls me and tells me she is at
the New Rome Poloice Trailer (What a JOKE that place is) 300,000 Dollars and
they have a Trailer, but anyhow he pulls her over and tells her he was checking
every 25th car license plate. And he seen that the primary driver had a Temp
Licenses (Sounds Fishy to me ) so the cop tell her she is under arrest and
she would have to come with him and the only reason he wasn't putting handcuffs
on her was because My 5 year old daughter and My G/F 5 year old son was there,
For a NON MOVING Violation they arrest her and my kids? So I picked her up
and was very pissed off I went up into the trailer and was aready for battle,
I called my lawyer and I was pissed. As I walked into the Trailer I
was on my cell phone talking to my lawyer and I noticed this lady standing
at the Window. She was bringing them lunch. So as I was talking on my phone
the lady behind the window asked me how I could help, I told my lawyer to
hold on one sec and begain to tell her I was here to pick up my G/F and My
Children, There might have been a few cus words flying out and a comment
or two on how crooked the little town of New Rome is, When the lady standing
on the same side of the window turned to me and said you soundl't have let
your G/F drive with no license with your kids. My question is how did she
know about the case and is that legal? Well this is my story, She has to
go to court on Thursday and suggestions?
Steve
Jim says:
Isn't that some crap they pull? What has your
lawyer said? Lots of people seems to think anytime one gets a ticket
in New Rome you should right away have your case transferred to Franklin
County Court. So maybe do that and at least you will get a fair trial.
They also seem to be more willing to drop charges and the fines are less.
Of course I'm no lawyer so don't take my word as law.
jim, your website is providing a valuable service.
it would be nice if you could make the tow page easier for people with reading
glasses to read without reading glasses (maybe larger, bolder or black on
white instead of white on black for more highlighting). Also instead of advising
people to detour by way of norton rd...better to cut through what used to
be kroger's parking lot (too bad kroger moved east of new rome and lincoln
village).and people at Rome Hilliard Rd. should cut through franks and wendys
parking lots to be safe.
i got stopped for going 42
(supposedly) there about 2 years ago. If I was such a dangerous speeder going
east thru new rome on broad St. why didn't the officer turn on his lights
to stop me until I turned left on N. Murray Hill at the Big Bear? Probably
so I wouldn't know if I had been going 42 in New Rome or just 42 outside
of new rome.He was a young hothead. I had been on a half hour break from
work and made the mistake of going for bean burritos at the Taco Bell in
New rome.As he is checking my license, I discover they gave me beef burritos
and I am a vegetarian. I had insurance, but my card was expired and they
had not sent me a new card yet.So he threatened me with no insurance proof
and seatbelt tickets also after i told him my lunch was ruined, i would never
buy anything in new rome again, and here why don't you eat these burritos...they
are not even the right thing.Did not fight the speeding ticket(heard it was
a kangaroo court), filed a letter of complaint to the new rome mayor about
the treatment of the officer was not professional, but i am sure that went
in the trashcan, never got a reply.
As for the tow lady
who said she was driving without insurance and under suspension because she
is in recovery and wants to get her act together first, I do not have much
sympathy.Yes, they over-reacted,but I was backended by a sober driver who
had no insurance and caused about $450 damage to my car and has yet to pay
a penny. My insurance co. got a judgement against him, now they can suspend
his license if he doesn't pay, but then probably he will just drive without
a license.
I have hopes Jaime
Mueller can reform New Rome and clean up an eyesore of a town on Broad St.,
but he has an uphill battle against all the crooks running that town. Recently
I was brave enough to drive down broad st to a business shop there and i
was inspired to stick out my tongue at the police office parked on broad.
Nothing happened, miracle of miracles, god looked out for me. My sister said
"Are you crazy? Was your seatbelt on?" I said,"Oh, I forgot about that".donna
Jim says:
Thank Donna. You're a perfect example of someone
who did nothing wrong. You weren't driving recklessly fast or a danger
to anyone, but you still got treated like an everyday criminal. Our
great freeway system runs fine with the random stops that police do.
We don't need someone to constantly watch every driver that drives by.
That kind of scrutiny is insane.
I want New Rome to go down! I will avoid that
little patch of area at all times. Two years ago.....I got pulled over
by the New Rome police. It was the week of Christmas. He was
sitting in the Kroger parking lot right there at the corner of Norton and
Broad. In the back of my head....I debated whether or not to continue
straight...or turn left on Norton.....but...I figured...as long as I do 35.....my
seat belt is buckled...all of my head lights and tail lights work.....I should
be okay. Well....I did go on and go through New Rome. The cop
proceeded and followed me. But not like he was chasing me or going
to pull me over. I made it through alright....but then he turned off
right there at Wendy's. As I was able to pick up speed to 45.....I
looked in my rearview mirror to see....him turn it around in the Aldi parking
lot and throw on his lights. He then came chasing after me. He
pulled me over in front of that George's Golf
Course and the strip club. He rudely came up to my window and automatically
told me.....that my license was expired. I said no....my birthday was
November 27th and I got my tags on my birthday. He said...no...your
drivers license is expired. Well.....that was my fault. I did
not pay attention when I did get my tags that my drivers license had expired
on my birthday as well. But the more and more I thought about it......I
asked why he pulled me over? He told me..."random check!" I asked
him "what?" The nerve of those people! And I did the speed limit
the whole time! Well....he gave me a ticket after having me sit there
for almost twenty five minutes. I had to appear in "trailer court"
right after Christmas. I went the very next day after I got pulled
over and renewed my license. When I got to court.....I was the only
one in that whole place that did not pay before walking out! Even though
I got my license renewed....they were still going to make me pay! I
told them I wanted to take it to Franklin County. The chief tried to
argue the issue with me and told me if I do.....I will pay their court costs...on
top of Franklin Counties court costs! Well...I was fuming when I walked
out of there. I even had people clapping for me because I stood up
to them. Half the people in that court room couldn't' even speak English.
It was sad! So when I did appear in Franklin Co....they dismissed my
case. I did have to pay court costs for Franklin
Co....but I paid them with a smile.....because
it didn't go to New Rome! I will never....I mean...NEVER...drive through
that little patch of ground again! If I go to a store or anyplace there...I
will park my car in the Kroger parking lot and walk! But to "randomly"
pull somebody over? That is totally uncalled for!
Jim says:
Random check. How's that for a line?
Next they will be telling you how they did it for your own good.
Jim,
I think your site is awesome and all of those people
that defend New Rome are either benefiting from the $365,000 they're bringing
in each year from fines or are completely out of their minds.
Here's my story:
I sped through New Rome. I didn't do it on purpose.
I don't want any pity for the fact that I got the ticket. I looked down and
looked up and missed the sign. That's my fault. I sped. What isn't my fault
is that right in the middle of a 45 mph zone, those crooks decided to put
a glaringly obvious speed trap. Then they give me a ticket, but conveniently
tell me to "call in" to find out how much I need to pay. I was planning on
fighting it or at least appearing in court, but again I screwed up. I didn't
go and I didn't call. My ticket was due on Friday. So Monday I was going
to take my lunch hour to go pay it and get it taken care of, but before I
could, two nice police officers come to see me at my work. The receptionist
buzzes me, and says that I have two visitors in the lobby. I come up the
steps and run face to face into two cops holding a picture of me that completely
takes up an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. I stuttered out, "Is this about my
ticket?" in complete astonishment and they said yes and that I had to go
with them. Now picture this, I'm 25 years old, the worst thing I've ever
done was getting this speeding ticket and now I'm being arrested for it at
my place of employment! Ok, so they walk me down to get my purse and
then take me outside and put me in the cruiser. Once in the cruiser, they
HANDCUFFED me and drove me down to the trailer they call a police station.
On the way there, the Sgt. is telling me jokes and trying to make me laugh
while I'm struggling to wipe the tears away because my hands are cuffed.
We finally get there and I asked if I could have the handcuffs taken off
because there is a large construction crew working close by and they tell
me no that it's policy to keep them on until I get in the station. Then I'm
told to sit on the lovely bench while they process my warrant. The guy finally
comes out and tells me that I owe $103 for the ticket and $50 for the warrant.
I paid the atrocious amount and then they had the gall to ask me if I knew
Spanish. I said no and they said, "Oh, we have an inmate coming in and he
only speaks Spanish." These idiots think that I'm actually going to translate
for them after what they've put me through! You've got to be kidding. Then
they tell me that I need to find my own ride back to work. I called a friend
from work and she comes and gets me. We get back and a few people had seen
what was going on, but not everyone. Thank God. So I think the nightmare's
over and I could chalk it up as a MAJOR lesson learned. But it gets better...this
happened in November, and last month I received a letter in the mail that
my license had been suspended. I quickly jumped on-line to get the transaction
number from when the check card debit had gone through. Then on Monday I
called New Rome. They said, "Oops, your file was accidentally put in the
wrong pile." I said, "That's great, now what do I have to do to fix this."
They told me that I had to come back to New Rome and pick up a Release of
Forfeiture and take it clear out on the east side to have my license reinstated.
I couldn't believe it! I live 30 minutes from either location and because
they screwed up I had to take time off and run all over the city. I told
the guy at New Rome to try to fax over the forfeiture so I wouldn't have
to take time off of work. He did and gave me a number to call to make sure
that it was taken care of. I called the number and the not-so-nice guy on
the other end of the phone said that he couldn't help me. He said that the
fax could be there, but he wouldn't check and that my license would be released
in 10 business days. He also, sweetly told me that if I came over there face
to face, he could do it for me right then. I struggled with the fact that
he could walk over to the fax machine if I was THERE, but not if I was on
the phone. I refused to give up and ended up talking to 7 different people
at the BMV and calling New Rome around 6 or 7 times. The ladies and gentleman
of the BMV proceeded to treat me as if I was a serial killer and kept asking
me why I had lost my license in the first place, needless to say, they were
very condescending. I repeatedly told them, that it was mistakingly revoked
but their attitudes didn't change. Finally, I had to call New Rome again
and have them call. Still nothing. In my last desperate attempt, I finally
spoke to Jay at the BMV who within 1 minute walked to the fax machine and
said, "Done. It's all taken care of." So five days later, and what seemed
like a thousand minutes on hold I was a legal driver again.
That's why I think New Rome Sucks! I really hope
that Mr. Mueller will clean the place up like he says he will. If so, I'm
behind him all the way.
Thanks for providing an outlet for this. You're doing
a great job :-)
Jim says:
Thanks for sharing that with us. Another fine
example of public humiliation that New Rome seems to like to cause.
Mental and financial abuse all rolled into one. I'm still upset I didn't
get arrested. I would have been in The Dispatch!
Jim-
Great site; I love it. I live way over here in Springfield,
but I hate the New Rome police, too. I go to some of the stores on West Broad
regularly so I fear being stopped by the cops when I'm in the area. Once
a few years ago I was in the freekin' PARKING LOT in front of Big Bear when
one of them popped his lights on me! I stopped right there and in a moment
he just smiled and waved me to go on. I don't know even what he planned to
get me for but it appears as if one of those old boys had a microsecond-long
flash of decency and common sense! I'm sure he was written up, fined, and
eventually executed by his superiors for his transgession. Keep up the good
work, and good luck; I've bookmarked your site and will check back regularly.

Jim says:
Those police are just insane! They probably
try to ticket people while off duty! Anyone out there actually know
one of these police? I would like to chat with one and see how they
rationalize the stuff they do away! If you are a police, mail me!
I won't post your address. Let us hear New Romes side of the story!
Great Site! New Rome deserves all the bashing
it can get. Just a small tale of annoyance from me. I was parked
on a private lot in New Rome. A woman was pulled over in front of me.
Two officers got out of the car. One went to her car and one came to
mine. He asked to see my license and registration. I said why?
He said I ran your plate and this plate does not come back to this car.
I said, the hell it doesn't. I gave him the information requested.
He checked and rant the plate again. He then said, never mind it was
an error.
l. Why did he run my plate if I was sitting
on private property?
2. Why is he permitted to abuse the LEEDS
system in this way?
He had NO valid reason to run my plates. AND
this officer knew me from a previous conversation in passing which had nothing
to do with LAW ENFORCEMENT. I do believe they sit like vultures and
wait for someones chops to bust just so they look like they're working.
I was NOT amused.
Betsy
Jim says:
You are right. They sit and wait for people
to stop and ticket. They wouldn't have nothing to do otherwise.
New Rome doesn't have any crime and contrary to popular believe, it's not
because of the police force. There is just nothing there the criminals
want! If they were a wealthy area, you can bet there would be crime!
Back in November I had a run in with New Rome. My boyfriend
and I were on our way home from a weekend trip in Virginia. It was about
11pm when we were at the light by the New Rome Hotel on Broad Street. When
I turned onto Rome Hilliard Road I saw the blue lights in my rear view mirror.
I pulled over… two cops stepped out of their vehicle and came to my window…
they wanted my license, registration and insurance. I was a little nervous,
as you would be with a police office on either side of the car shining flashlights
in. I gave him everything he asked for… actually I accidentally gave him
my boyfriend’s license to begin with because it was in my wallet… the office
then told me I had given him the wrong license. So I shuffled around in my
purse and found mine. He then proceeded to tell me why he pulled me over
– he said the light above my license plate wasn’t working. (meaning they
were profiling)
I had only lived in Ohio for a year as of November
and hadn’t obtained an Ohio driver’s license yet. My boyfriend and I both
had a Virginia driver’s license that was NOT expired. The officer asked me
why I hadn’t gotten an Ohio driver’s license yet. I told him I had a valid
Virginia driver’s license and I didn’t think I needed to until my Virginia
license actually expired. He said you only have 30 days after you establish
residence here. He then said, "Do you know this is an arrestable offense?"
I said no sir I did not. The two went back to their cars, I thought they
were writing me a ticket. About 10 minutes later they returned to the car
and asked me to step out of the car and come around to the back of the vehicle.
He pointed to the light above my license plate and said it should be "illuminating
my license plate brighter than it actually was." In fact – the light was
working just fine – it was just a little dirty not making the light bright
enough. I showed the officer that the light was working, he still said it
wasn’t bright enough. So at this point he has pulled me over for a faulty
light he thought wasn’t working – but in-fact it was working fine, it just
need the dust brushed off… so his probable cause theory was out the window.
He then reached for the cuffs on his belt and told
me he was placing me under arrest for not having an Ohio Operators license.
I said I have a Virginia license, it’s not like I am driving around on suspended
license or never obtained a driver’s license. He put the cuffs on me and
my boyfriend went to step out of the car and the other office went over to
him "step back into the car, step away from the police car blah, blah, blah."
He then put me in the back of the police car. The officers told my boyfriend
they were taking me down to the station for not having a valid Ohio operators
license and if I wanted to go home tonight he would have to come up with
$350 bail money within 2 hours – otherwise I would spend the night in jail.
They wouldn’t let him drive my car either because they knew he had a VA driver’s
license as well, so they left him to walk. They were going to impound my
car… but decided if I would let them, they would drive it over to Frank’s
Nursery. I think their tactics were to get into my car hoping they would
find something else in there to hold me for or they were going to watch my
car and wait for me to pick it up…but I had my friend pick it up the next
day.
So, they took me to the police station handcuffed,
once inside the pitiful trailer they handcuffed my ankles to the bench as
well. In the meantime, my boyfriend is walking to the bank to come up with
this ridiculous amount of money for such a ridiculous charge. While I was
sitting on the bench they were asking me questions, and then they were discussing
whether to give me a ticket for the faulty light or just for not having an
operators license. Once my boyfriend arrived with they money they released
us free to walk home – lucky us. By this time it’s 2:00 am and freezing outside.
My court date is the following week. I called a couple lawyers to try and
get some advice. I was really close to trying to fight the entire thing or
having it transferred to Franklin County Courts – but the lawyer fees were
double what I had to pay in bail money. Every lawyer that I talked to didn’t
have one nice to say about the New Rome district… they said they have never
heard of anyone being arrested for this charge – but when I told them where
I was ticketed, they said it didn’t surprise them one bit. So, I went to
court and plead no contest. I brought my new Ohio Drivers license with me
and they charged me with no-ops - $75 fine and kept 10% of my bail money.
I had never been in a court room like this – it was
like a classroom. The cops passed around piece of paper before court even
started…giving you the "new rome rules." They made us initial and sign this
piece of paper agreeing to all sorts of bull. All of the charges in that
court room that day were as ridiculous as mine – they were making a killing
off of us all!
I am with anyone who is trying to shut down New Rome,
I think what I had to go through was ridiculous; If anything I should have
been given a warning… not been arrested and treated like a criminal. I had
a drivers license – it just didn’t say OHIO !
Thanks for listening…
Kerry
Jim says:
I sat in the same "court" for 3 hours and watched
them rake in the money from the fines. I hope you will join in our Class
Action Lawsuit and help shut them down!
Dear Jim,
I was puled over for a "weak"
license plate light a few years back when I still lived on the west side.
As the officer approached I released my safety belt to get my information
out of the glove box. Since my lights were working I ended up getting a ticket
for not wearing a seat belt, doh! Unlile you, my hero now, I paid my New
Rome "tax" and went on my unhappy way with a bad taste of New Rome eft in
my mouth. After I had paid my "tax" I vowed to the "tax collectors in the
trailer" never to do business in New Rome or west side busnesses close to
it.
Please keep up the good fight
and hopefully the shame of the west side of Columbus and Ohio will be
overcome someday!
"Doc"
Jim says:
Weak license plate light. What kind of crap
charge is that? Makes me so mad. I have heard of people getting
seat belt tickets for unlatching to do something. I think if I ever
have to unlatch I will make sure the police verifies they see it is latched
before I get out of the car.
This is a great idea.
But you might to scout the area. Find the best non
New Rome places for people to park. This way no one needs to drive IN New
Rome. I'd suggest the old Drug World parking lot about half a mile east of
New Rome.
I also have a T.o.W. to tell. Long story short
my dad was pulled over and fined and needed to pay it at the New Rome office.
He did pay it every week for what seemed like ever. He gets it all paid up
and then a few weeks later guess who shows up at our front door. YEP! New
Rome cops. They said he hadn't paid any of his fine and he was to come with
them. Well he showed them his receipts but he still had to go get it figured
out in New Rome. Turns out this was the start of the 2nd big
money scandal at the clerks office. The lady
he gave the money too would write the receipt then pocket the money. Nice
HUH! He didn't have to pay again and the clerk got in tons of trouble.
Jim says:
Clerks taking money seems to be a big part of New
Romes problems. Only seems fair really. Someone screwing over
the screwers. Very good if you ask me.
Your 100% right. I have had several run in's with NRPD.
When I was in high school at Westland back in the
mid 80's, I was traveling down one of their streets south of New Rome towing
when I was stopped and cited for traveling the wrong way on a one way street.
Those illiterate losers had the one way sign posted
at the end of the street. You did not know you were going the wrong direction
until you got to the end of the street where one of their losers was sitting
waiting.
Another problem I have had with this is their total
disregard for the safety of the motoring public. I have seen those idiots
do U-turns in the middle of the road and take off like they were chasing
a wanted felon. Later you would hear them on the scanner say they had stopped
them for expired tags or some BS stop.
A friend was stopped one night for her license plate
light. Not because it was out, but because the illiterate fucks said it was
too dim???? No where in the ORC does it say anything about how bright
it must be. New Rome must be covered by the ordinances of some alien
planet.
Being a member of the law enforcement community myself,
many others make fun of New Rome. They are a standing joke.
I have heard stories from a friend that works for
Franklin County Sheriff's office that they have had to respond to the New
Rome "Justice Center" for fights and domestics. New Rome cant even handle
problems of their own.
I am like you, I used to live on the west side, and
I avoided New Rome.
Good luck and keep up the fight.
Paul
Jim says:
Thanks for sharing Paul. They tried to blame
ODOT for posting their speed limit sign wrong and the U turn sign upside down.
I didn't buy it for a minute. I'm not surprised they have to call the
Sheriff for REAL crime. They wouldn't know what to do with themselves
if anything really happened in New Rome.
It was a Saturday morning and I was on my way to the
barber shop in New Rome. They do a very nice job for a reasonable price.
I stopped at the light and then proceeded to turn left into the barber shop.
I parked and was about to get out of the car and the Cruiser pulled up behind
me. He asked for my license and I replied, I don't have it. See,
he ran my tag while I was at the light and determined that my vehicle was
legally registered to me but it showed that I only had a temp license and
I didn't have anyone in the vehicle with me.
Now, don't get me wrong, I should have
had a licensed driver with me. My fault! But the events that followed,
are what I call shady at best. I was arrested and had to post a 350.00
bond. My kangeroo court date came up and the lawyer/magistrate dismiss
the charge and told Lt Cunningham it had to be ammended. So the arrogant
police cheif took me into his office and said, sign this waiver to forfeit
your bond and you can go with away with no points and nothing else will follow.
I thought about it and said no. He had an officer, that I have never
seen before, write me a new ticket for driving without a license. So,
when my next court date came up, I told them that I was pleading not guilty.
I waited for a few hours before I had my turn. I told the magistrate
that I wanted the arresting officer to explain the situation of my arrest.
Which I am entitled to by law. He said, oh no, your charge was ammended
and any other officer can rewrite the ticket! So after beating my head
against the crooked trailer wall, I ended up having to forfeit all
but 50.00 of my bond. I have spent my entire adult life in the Armed
Forces defending the rights of the constitution, so it can deal me a hand
like this! No prior record, I was not under any suspension, I just
got lazy and hadn't taken my road test yet.
I then wrote to the Attorney Generals Office
and explained the situation. They responded rather quickly, but only
could offer sympathy for the situation and an explanation that they have no
governing power over the village's mayors court. Then who does?
I think it's time to rid the west side community of Lt Cunningham and his
band of misfits. These are officers that can't cut it in a real law
enforcement agency. I believe that any other agency would have parked
my vehicle and given me a warning and a chance to find a ride home.
Not much to ask. So needless to say, I haven't returned to the New Rome
barber shop since. This was 18 months ago. Thanks for giving
us a forum to speak out about the injustices in this world.
Jim says:
There needs to be some sort of authority over all
Law Enforcement Officials run by the Federal Government. The expectations
they have for these sort of small Village are insane. If people were
all good and honest like the State seems to think then everything would be
fine and dandy! WAKE UP OHIO!!!
While the details have left me because it was quite
a while ago, I had a friend who recieved a call at work from her husband
saying he was being booked on the charges of grand theft auto and that she
was to bring a lawyer to the New Rome Police station. They had pulled
him over because they decided to run his tags ON A WHIM (they must have run
out of other things to do in the car) and found out the tags had been reported
STOLEN!!! The man that they pulled over worked for a car dealer ship
and had a paystub in his wallet to prove employment (not ownership) of that
business and that his employer could straighten out the whole mess.
They told him to quit lying and call his wife or an attorney because this
was a Federal offense and they were going to see that he received the FULL
sentence!! Sadly, I believe this man spent two days in their pathetic
jail before they could convince ANYONE in the New Rome judical system that
this was a clerical error of the employers office....and this was with lawyers
and employers showing up and speaking for the man!!! All he recieved
for his time was an apology. Barney Fiffe has NOTHING on these "Chicken
Littles" running around with their "skies a fallin"!!!
Jim says:
Typical New Rome PD for ya! Don't use common
sense to do anything. Shouldn't have taken that long to clear it up,
but they like to drag things out.
Hey man, your site is GREAT!
I have
one for you, you can post this if you want. A couple of
years ago I was playing in a Christian band from New Rome, their name is
Body Parts. It was my first practice with them, and , while
on my way, not bothering a soul, in my Volvo ( the point being it was
not one of those turnip trucks that you need a ladder to get into or a 53
Chevy with cheater slicks) I seen the cherry flashing in my mirror.
When I pulled over, this little fellow that looked like he was about 15 years
old and dressed up as a cop walked up and asked for my license. I complied,
and after being detained for a while, he came back to inform me that
my license had expired. Not my tags, my operators permit. He
gave me the ticket (and actually did me a
favor, because I was almost past the 6
months mark). At that point, I asked him why he had pulled
me over, and he replied
"your license is expired" and I said,
"no, WHY did you pull me over to begin with?" and he replied "I ran
your plate and your license was expired". SHEEEEESH!.
When I got to band
practice and told them I was late because I got popped in their sweet little
berg, there was a simultanious "you was profiled!"
It had never occurred to me up to that point, but, there are
people who ask me if I am a
biker. Aparently , this little
fellow decided I was John Dillenger because of my appearance.
I bet I made his day, he got
to write me up and everything, He probably
even blew on his whistle when he got back in the car just to keep in practice.
The funny thing is, I was not even angry, because thewhole situation
was like a skit from Saturday Night Live.
I don't put my credit card info on the net, is there
a way I can get some NEW ROME SUCKS merchandise from a different
source? you should open a NEW ROME
SUCKS store just outside of town, you couldn't loose.
I will trade you a copy of my CD, I am a musician
with a CD out... for a 2xLarge NEWROME SUCKS t-shirt. ok, then
, two CDs.......
P S if i get in another band,
and I can get a NEW ROME SUCKS t-shirt, It will replace the t-shirt
I normally wear now when I play...........

Jim says:
I don't know if they profile so much as just run
as many plates as they can and take advantage of the fact that we are human
and make mistakes. If every police force did what New Rome does people
would have to stop driving or we would constantly be paying tickets.
As for being in a band, that is awesome! If
you or band has a web site let me know and I will put a link the New Rome
Sucks Supporter section!
My T.o.W sounds rather petty compared to the ones I've
read on this site, but I would like to tell it anyway because it was so strange.
I work for the Dispatch as a truck driver. I lived in Galloway and would
go through New Rome every morning after work around 4:00 am. I am a law abiding
citizen and at the time was driving a very inconspicuous 86 Corolla. 5 days
a week for several years would drive 34 and half miles an hour through
Amityville with not a thought that I would have a problem. Well......One
morning I had Barney Fife make a U-turn, speed up, Tail me all the way to
Galloway Rd. I turned south and he did too. He then slowed down and I thought
he was going to turn around in the high school parking lot. No, deputy Fife
let me get about a quarter mile ahead of him and he floored it. He must have
been doing a good 90 MPH, when I got scared he was going to hit me. He finally
slowed down and gave up the chase.
I am a stubborn guy myself so I continued my route
home as usual. A week later I see Barney, Gomer, Floyd, or whoever got deputized
that week do the "Uie" on me. I pulled over into the IGA parking lot. He
went on by. I waited for his return. I waived him to come to me. I asked
him what his problem was. He said he didn't have one. I then told him if
he would ever follow me down Galloway Rd. again and floored it that I was
going to take action. He played dumb and said it wasn't him. It may not have
been, I'm not sure. He then informed me that my license plate light was out
and that the could give me a ticket if he wanted to. I told him get to writing
but don't ever do that to me again. He, believe it or not didn't ticket me.
Wonders never cease.
I thank the Dispatch for it's great coverage of this
story. There is more so keep digging. I love this site. Go mayor Jamie. To
all the good people of New Rome, understand that you may be aligning yourself
up with the most corrupt government in all the land because you are afraid
of change. I know some of you are upset (G. D.) because you feel that the
new mayor doesn't really live in New Rome. Well maybe he doesn't. But legally
he has established residence there as far as the Board of Elections are concerned.
Legally it looks as if he is the only one really in office. Get behind him
and rid yourself of all these money stealing, corrupt mayor, bully policeman,
(read any of these letters), and go with a guy that will not only clean up
the corruption, but clean up an unsightly section of West Broad street. Look
what he did to the dilapidated Lincoln Lodge. I can see those good
folks of New Rome becoming council members and using it's funds to fix up
that small stretch of the National Rd. to make it part of Americana that
could be cherished, rather than the embarrassment of western Franklin County.
Thanks for a place to tell it like it is.
Rocky, Now living on
the New Rome by-pass.

Way to go! After watching them on the news
I am hoping that they are behind Jamie! At least the people in the meeting
not acting like fools seemed to support him.
Hi,
Well my husband and I were the
happy couple that was ticketed twice in one night by New Rome police. Our
car was towed, and it cost a fortune to get it out. We were on our way from
Galloway to Broad St. and came up Norton Road to
Broad St. We DID NOT GO THROUGH NEW ROME EITHER
TIME!!!!!!!!!! When it was time to go to mayors court, we were asked
to write down every road we took up until we were arrested (which by the way
was disorderly conduct). After submitting that to the mayor, it turns out
they dropped the charges but did not refund us for the impoundment. So, I
think New Rome sucks, also. I believe that the police in New Rome are too
quick to give out tickets if they can ticket people that do not even go through
the town. Do away with New Rome.
Thanks,
Vicki
Jim says:
I have heard of people just turning on to Norton
from Broad or Broad from Norton and getting stopped even though they never
go into New Rome. They are that crazy!
I love your website, man! I know it's not easy
fighting that crooked scum, and it's difficult being without a drivers license...but
hang in there! We are making progress, and getting closer to shutting
down that inbred police force (if not the entire town)!
I've lived just outside of NEW ROME for over 25 years
now. I've had family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors who all share
the same horror stories. They all were pulled over and ticketed NOT
because they were endangering the lives of others, but of course because
the cops found something minor to charge them with so they could make their
quota.
I personally encountered the disgustingly fat, donut-eating
pigs after just having been recently married in 1992. It was a Sunday,
and my tags expired the day before (Saturday), so yes...a PERFECT opportunity
to get me, the law breaking,
trouble-making newlywed!!!
My intentions were to go in on Monday to take care
of it. I didn't know too much about New Rome back then, and didn't
think he would actually ticket me. But the money grabbing, stealing
thieves as they are, wrote me up and I was on my way.
I made the mistake of not paying it right away. (Here's
where the story gets real good). With having just moved into a new
apartment and just recently married, the last thing on my mind was paying
the ticket. I was leaving the apartment one day and said goodbye to
my wife, when I passed a New Rome officer. I didn't think much of it.
And I found out later that he came to
my apartment looking for me. My wife told
him that I had JUST left.
I was in that Cardinal grocery store at the time
and was just about to get into the car, when he runs up to me all out of breath,
and about to faint. He reaches into his holster and pulls out his gun pointing
it at me like I had just robbed the place!
He takes me to the disposable, joke-of-a-police station
and handcuffs me to the chair. I get my ONE phone call, trying desperately
to get a hold of my wife having never been in this situation before. The
line was busy. So I hung up and dialed her
parents. Just as I entered the last digit,
he flies OVER the desk like I was about to detonate a bomb or something and
SLAMS the phone down SCREAMING "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!!" I told him that
the line was busy, and I was calling her parents. He tried to make
me feel like a fool by telling me that in order to do that I have to check
with HIM first.
Well his intimidation didn't work with me.
The stupid ticket was paid, but only after he joked around how I was only
5 minutes from going downtown cause her parents took forever to get there.
I've DJ'ed now for over 14 years. It's only
a matter of time when NEW ROME goes down...and when it does I think we should
all have a PARTY!!! I will provide the DJ services, and would like to know
if we could get feedback on this.
Personally, I have not driven through NEW ROME ever
since my encounter, and urge others to do the same. I know there will
be VICTIMS from out of town who don't know about that speed trap. But as
for the rest of us, if we refused to give
them any of our business and all took alternate
routes (like me), that's all money they would NOT be getting.
As for the business owners of New Rome, it's nothing
against you. But let's face it...the town is a joke! It's not
on most maps,
in fact the officers have to leave town just
to get gas! I've seen them over the years driving down the road eating
at the OTHER healthy, fast food establishments. Of course! Wouldn't
YOU get sick of eating at the same two places if you could only patrol 2
blocks??
But seriously, I feel bad for the businesses in a
way cause I know they are losing money because of the crooked officials, but
haven't we???
Jim says:
We have lost millions to them over the years.
Of course, the businesses don't like the police either. I think the
only ones who like the police are the police! A party would be great!
hahaha Block off Broad Street. Would be very funny!
Hi Jim,
I, too, have been a victim of the New Rome Cops.
I was stopped in the mid 1980's (no, I do not still hold a grudge-yeah right!)
for failure to stop at a stop sign. I was rolling backwards on a slight
incline behind Norton Middle School, and was told I did not stop.
Now, most Physicists will say that in order to go backwards, you have to
come to a stop, but no New Rome cop has the ability to grasp this concept.
Since you can't fight City Hall, I was forced to pay the ticket. This
ticket cost $48.00
and I was told CASH ONLY and EXACT CHANGE...hhhmmmmmm,
I wonder why!!!! When I went to pay it, some old bag told me exact change
as all I had was $50.00. Therefore, I had to go and get change so that
I could pay her because they did not have 2 lousy dollars change. Oddly
enough, this never appeared on my license. Go figure! I long
for the day to see New Rome absorbed into Prairie Township. I have
never bought a thing in New Rome and never, never will. Whenever I
see their cops outside of their jurisdiction (which is quite often), I yell
out my rolled down window that they are losers, bums, etc., you get the idea!
I yelled at one cop that New Rome sucks and he yelled back, yah, yah, yah,
New Rome Sucks...apparently he hears that quite a bit. I have the privilege
of seeing these rent-a-cops on a daily basis as I am a far west side resident
and have been for my entire life. We avoid New Rome at all costs!
New Rome has been shit stain on the west side forever! I hope Mueller
wins!! Go Mueller!!! Shut'em down!!!

Hi my name is Suzanne and I have been struggling with
New Rome. They arrested me in front of my daughter and my boyfriend's
kids because my license was suspended that I did not know. They pulled
me over for no reason and asked for my driver's license. They handcuff
me and took me to the station then handcuff my leg to the chair. I
asked for an interpreter and they said I have to pay and the only thing I
communicate with them is by writing. I am hard of hearing and I refuse
to speak to them because I did not want any misunderstanding. They
won't provide interpreter for my court date so I went to Deaf Service Center
and filed a complaint against New Rome. The judge who is also a policeman
lied to me. I can not drive for one year. My boyfriend paid the
bail to get me out they are costing me so much money. My boss who I
work for works at the Tony whatever the name of the restaurant, she works
there part time and there was a sign that said "No turn on red" she didnt
see it and turned on red and got pulled over but they let her go because
she works in New Rome but I got a ticket. I am so angry for what they
are doing and I, myself want to get back at them for all they done and how
they scared the hell out of my daughter who thought her mother was going
to get killed. I am in recovery and I told my boyfriend that do they
have better things to do beside sitting along side the road and give out
tickets, why don't they get their asses out there busting drug dealers.
Innocent people like me got arrested because I was driving without insurance
( I know better but being in recovery im trying to get my life together I
kept putting off on insurance) anyway they should arrest people who is dealing
which can kill and without insurance isnt going to kill anybody but drug
will. Do I make sense? I've been sober for over 1 year and looking
back all this is bull. I am on your side! If you want to hear
more or if I don't make any sense in this letter please let me know.
I'm willing to do whatever I can to make it work (BETTER). They are
criminals and everytime I see them I want to puke on them. I saw the
picture in the paper of the cop who arrested me, I told my daughter that
I will use it for throwing darts at. She thought it was funny.
If you want to hear what my whole clear story I be willing to share.
Thanks, I enjoy your newromesucks.com website. Have a great day, Sue
Jim says:
Even throwing darts at their pictures is too good!
Put it in the pets litter box. Let them be dumped on for once.
Hi, my name is Megen. I was pulled over in the summer
of 1999 as I was going through New Rome on my way to my boyfriends house.
I am from Reynoldsburg and he lived off of Alton Rd so I always went through
New Rome until I knew
the area well enough. It was around 11 at night,
there was no one else on the road, I had my seat belt on, my music was turned
off, and for god's sake I even had my hands at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel.
I was at a stop light that had just turned green (I had stopped already but
it turned green right after that) and took off like normal. A New Rome cop
passed me right after I
got through that intersection and immediately
pulled a U-turn (you know, right there where the "no U-turn" sign is) through
the light that had already turned red. He pulled me over outside of New Rome
and when he came to my window he asked for my identification and insurance
which I had in my center console. I gave it to him and he proceeded to ask
me very rudely why
I was all the way out there this late at night.
He wanted to know where I was going, why I was going there, and he even asked
me to verify some of the information on my id like I had no business being
out of my house and so far from home that late at night. I still didnt know
what I had even gotten pulled over for until he handed me the ticket. I got
pulled over for failure
to properly display plates (probably because
he couldnt bust me for anything else). I have a modified sports car and I
had just put on my car bra that morning and forgot to put my front plate back
on. I didnt do anything wrong in order to get ticketed, unless you count
being the only person on the road a crime. Also, when he handed me my ticket
he told me he was going to be
nice and only give me a ticket for my plates
and that he was making it a non moving violation. How is that being nice?
First all, that offense isnt a moving violation to start with and what ever
happend to giving out a warning?
The other problem I had with New Rome is that every
time I drove through after I got that ticket (I went in to pay it in person
and complained to anyone within 5 feet of me...my mom also went in and complained)
a cop would fly out of an ally and tailgate me way out of the city limits
and sometimes they would pull in behind me when I pulled off the road like
they were going to do something. They pretty much harassed me whenever they
saw me.
Thankfully the guy I am dating now lives on
the same side of town as me and I dont ever have to deal with New Rome ever
again!

because my car looks better than your boyfriends!"
Jim says:
New Rome leaves no room for mistakes and punishes
to the fullest extent. I got pulled over by Columbus Police a long while
back because my headlight was out. I also had expired license.
I had went that Saturday to get new ones, but the place closed for painting
and by the time I got to another they had closed for the day. I told
the police. He gave me a ticket for that and for the headlight.
I got them renewed and fixed the light. Went to court and the dismissed
the expired license and there for a 5 dollar fine for the bad headlight.
50 bucks after court. In New Rome, I would have been taken to jail.
$250 or something like that for invalid license, $103 for headlight, and whatever
else they could dig up. End of story. They are just wrong in
so many ways!
Jim,
I heard about your website on the John
Corby show and could not resist telling you my New Rome story, although I
didn't have to pay any fines, the experience sure left me with a decided bias
against New Rome's finest.
It was
a Saturday night in late January back in 1997. I was volunteering at a bingo
hall in the South end of Columbus for my sons school. One of our regular players
was a sweet little old lady that everyone just loved to death. Well, her
son had called the bingo hall and said his car had broken down and wouldn't
start and could anyone give her a ride home?
Well, being
the nice guy that I am, I offer to take her home. Unfortunately she
lived way out past Alton. So after the game we loaded up and headed out.
Before
getting too close to New Rome she warned me to take an alternate route to
avoid the little town because in her words "The cops out there are complete
and utter bastards!" (so much for the sweet little old lady routine)
I assured
her that everything would be all right and I drove through town at about 25m.p.h.
to make sure I wouldn't get pulled over. Before I made it halfway through
town the lights came on behind me and I was dumbfounded at why they pulled
me over.
I was asked
for license, registration and proof of insurance which I handed over and was
not told why I was pulled over, even after I had asked. After waiting around
for what seemed like 20 minutes, he finally came back and asked me to step
out of the car and informed me that he thought I had been drinking and commenced
to give me a field sobriety test. This would
have to be the longest sobriety test ever given
in the state of Ohio. And here is the worst part of the whole thing,
it was 10 degrees outside and he wouldn't let me get my coat out of the car
or at least start the car so that the poor woman could have some heat.
Well, after
about another 20 minutes of screwing around with Barney Fife, he finally said
he would let me go with a "warning". That was the final straw for me.
So I asked him "What in the hell are you giving me a warning about?" "I have
had nothing to drink, and I was driving 10 m.p.h. slower than the speed limit
because you guys are like highway nazis out
here!"
This was
why he was suspicious of my driving he said, because I was driving too slow.
"So how
do you get through this God forsaken town without being pulled over?" I asked.
"If I go a mile over the speed limit, you pull me over. If I go under
the speed limit, you pull me over. Why don't you just put up a damn
toll booth and be done with it?"
Needless
to say, this did not go over too well with him. So rather than push
my luck, I decided to get back in my car and get out of there before he tried
to cite me for jaywalking because I was standing too close to the street.
I know that sounds ridiculous, but after what I just went through anything
seemed possible.
In closing,
I would like to borrow from an old country song I once heard, I believe it
was a Charlie Daniels song: "I think I'm gonna reroute my trip, and I wonder
if anybody would think I flipped if I went to the South end, via Circleville!"
South Side Doug
Jim says:
I'm surprised he didn't bust out a headlight and
try to charge you will that and littering. ha ha ha ha the little old
lady calling them bastards cracks me up! Too bad she didn't give him
a piece of her mind. Of course from what they say, they would have
arrested her anyway. sigh
Hi! I am writing because I too, have been harrassed
for literally doing nothing, but being naive enough to drive through New
Rome. People had warned me about driving through there, but I don't
speed, don't have expired tags, a loud muffler, expired license, and
I always wear my seat belt, have my children in car seats, and use my turn
signals. So I am detemined that they are not going to make me feel
intimidated, and I am not going to go out of my way to avoid the ignorant
dumbells.
Well, I was traveling West on Broad St., approaching
the Hilliard Rome Rd. intersection. The light was green and I was just
going to turn right and proceed to go home to my place in Hilliard.
I didn't notice a cop anywhere, and was well on my way down Hilliard Rome
Rd., and out of nowhere, low and behold, I hear a police car speeding up the
road, with lights blazing, and sirens blaring. I quickly pulled to
the side of the road to allow him to pass, and almost had heart failure when
he pulled behind me and told me to pull over, over his loud intercom.
After sitting there for a few minutes, he came up to my car, and said he said
something that he had mistakenly pulled me over after running my tags-ugh!!!
I had done absolutely nothing to warrant his attention, and will never understand
how you pull someone over, and then how they have the wrong car? They
can't get their story straight, and I think it was just an exucse to mess
with someone. He even was smirking and almost laughing as he "apologized."
I'm sure they get a kick out of scaring people. That is sick, and control
at it's worst. We'll have the last laugh, New Rome, you'll see.
I have yet another story. I was going
East on Broad St. I had just passed the Hilliard Rome Rd. intersection,
and was proceeding continue East, and one of the lights in the speed trap
before Dr.s Hospital West turned yellow, after I was well in to the intersection.
I even saw the cruiser as I passed him , before all this took place, and was
taking extra caution, as usual. It must have not been that yellow for
me, because he also pulled over the car behind me. We both got tickets
for running the light. When I tried to explain to him, he said something
about my back tires not clearing the intersection. Ugh!! He even
admitted to me that he could see me getting through alright, but that the
driver behind me was definitely guilty. Well, when I told my husband
about this, we decided to go to their silly mayor's court to appeal the ticket.
We had all 5 of our children with us, and I was so nervous we would get in
trouble if they even made a peep, that he finally called my name and asked
if I just needed extra time to pay the $103.00 ticket. Is that their
favorite number, or what?!!
I gave in and said yes. I was afraid of
being arrested for anything they could find "wrong" We just wanted
to get out of there. They had already made a scene, or "example" out
of another guy in the room, who came in intoxicated, and arrested him, and
bound him with duct tape in the other room. They made sure everyone
else in the courtroom knew what they were doing with the man. Who would
be next?!!
I guess it's too late to do anything now, except
stand up to them, and know your rights!
I'm glad I'm not the only one!
Jim says:
You a perfect example of good people being made to
suffer their abuse! It's insane! I'm sorry. Going through
a yellow light gets a ticket! Since when?! And taping a guy
up! Come on! What happened to not being able to subject people
to cruel and unusual punishment! Of course there are people who need
that type of treatment, but you can't actually do it to them!
Thanks for a great site. I live in Michigan
and visit Columbus quite often. My wife's family lives there. I read the
article on New Rome this weekend and was reminded about being wrongly accused
of speeding and ticketed in Marion on my way to Columbus. I was livid but
to avoid being shot, I maintained my cool. After returning home, I researched
the Ohio State Patrol web site and found a complaint form. I completed it
and returned it with my check to the Marion Court house. You are my hero
for sticking to your guns to the point of losing your license! I don't have
that privilege but examples like yours are commendable!!
Ed
Jim says:
Thanks Ed. That means a lot! A lot of people think I'm insane.
Maybe a touch. But most of all I was brought up to believe in fighting
for what you believe. I guess I developed on that as I grew and do what
I feel is needed.
Jim,
I have a story for you.....
My boyfriend and I went out one night and had
to drive through new rome, i went down the alley behind broad street waited
at the light turned left going towards down town got all the way to the jolly
priate donut shop before i saw lights flashing, i know for a fact the cop
was not behind me in their jurisdiction. but oh well. so he gives me
a ticket for expired tags which i did have fine, i will pay the ticket for
that, my boyfriend also got a ticket for not having a seat belt on.
when it was time for me to go to court i went, i had a 4 o'clock court date
time but could not find either one of our tickets, so i asked the person
who was sitting where you sign in at if i could still go ahead and take care
of things without the tickets he said no they could do nothing with me without
tickets, and to call the station that monday, (this was on a friday) monday
morning i'm sitting at work at 7am when the sergant from new rome calls my
office, i was busy so i put him on hold one of my co-workers, who just happen
to be my boss picked up the phone and told him i would be right with him,
she then started to give him directions to where i worked, i told her to
put him back on hold now. when i got back on the phone he said there
was a warrant out for mine and my boyfriends arrest, for not showing up to
my court date or for paying my fines. i told him what happened when
i did go to my court date which he told me would never happen he then told
me that a officer was on their way to get my boyfriend as we spoke, i said
you cant he is with our daughter he then told me that was fine they would
just take her to childrens services, that is when i lost it, over a damn
seat belt ticket i dont think so. so i said how much is the total i
will be there today, he said 475.00 for the second ticket for expired
tags(i never got a first one) failure to display tags, which meant not having
plates on the front and back of your car which i did and i thought it was
funny that i got a ticket for that since the cop never saw the front of my
car. and for a seatbelt ticket and then they doubled everything for not showing
up at court. i argured got no where. had no "real" proof to back
up my story, so i ask him payment in any form correct he said i dont care
how you pay just come pay your fines, so i go there and go to write a check
and the lady at the desk (by the way i walk in to the trailer, i mean police
station and about 8 people are sitting around watching jerry springer)
says you cant write a check for warrants, i tell her that the sergant said
i could she called me a liar, that never would have been told to me in any
way. so i say fine i will go to the bank and get the money, i had no
time to do anything else before i was slammed against a wall and handcuffed.
they wanted me to walk into my bank handcuffed give all my bank info to a
police officer and get the money out i said hell no...... so i sat
for an hour in a room by myself getting more and more pissed off. finally
some woman comes in laughing saying oh you know what i dont know why they
made you sit when can just use your debit card. so finally after all
that, it was done and as i was walking out they were talking about thier
upcoming christmas party, i looked at the lady and said well you should
have a nice christmas, because i just paid for it. so that is my story.
so needless to say thanks for the website, you rock.
