Jim says:
Thanks for your support Matthew!
You are right about being sick and tired of them. It's time they get REAL jobs and quit mooching off Franklin County drivers!
-patsy-
Jim says:
Thanks Patsy. Some people just don't get it.
I used to be a long time resident of the Columbus area. I was never ticketed by the New Rome Police (if you can call them that) because I knew they were ticket happy and slowed way down. Now I live in Delaware (the state, not the county). Here you have to almost kill someone to get a ticket.
Here they use tickets they way they are supposed to be used. To get citizens to voluntarily comply with the speed limits and traffic laws. If I remember, New Rome uses them to "fund" their town government. I think your website is dead on the money. I mean how can a town that small justify having 3 police cars on duty at once covering 4 blocks?
keep up the good work!!
Brian
Jim says:
Thanks for your support Brian! I'm glad some places use Law Enforcement as it should be. To protect the people. Law is a good idea as it promotes the smooth flow of the system we call a society. Then you have places like New Rome who abuse the system and use it for their own gain. Money really is the root of all evil.
Jim says:
That's a great idea! Give them a list of their right as a New Rome Victim.
Jim says:
Thanks for your support! My problem with them was their Speed Limit Sign and how it was placed and such. They have corrected that and now my problem with them is everything else they stand for. The corruption and abuse they inflict on everyone that passes through.
Jim says:
Yes the state is the only ones who can take it away and give it back, but all they are interested in is their money. They don't care if the people who live in the State is abused by small Villages like New Rome. Let a State Official get a ticket in New Rome like WE get tickets and they would be shut down in the blink of an eye.
So you want to hear from cops and lawyer types? Ok...I've served as a deputy sheriff, city police officer, and afterward, I worked my way to a career as a Federal Officer with the US Dept.of Justice. I'm also a certified paralegal.
First off, officers can use their discretion and judgment as to whether write a speeding citation, a written warning ticket, a verbal warning, or not to stop you at all. It is a commonly accepted practice for officers NOT to stop motorists for less than 10 mph over the posted limit. The vast majority of cops will not pull over a motorist for less than 11 mph over the speed limit. It is common practice of police then to warn motorists with either a written or verbal warning in speeds from 11-15 mph over the limit. This unwritten code does not apply in New Rome, Ohio. DRIVER BEWARE!!!
About New Rome. New Rome is consistently listed in Trucker's Magazine as one of the top 10 speed traps in America. All readers are warned about observing the speed limit within their jurisdiction. New Rome has a population of 60 residents, yet 13 police officers? That is 1 police officer for every 4.5 residents. Residents should feel so lucky to have that kind of personal protection. The National ratio of cop to citizen in American cities is about 1cop to every 1,000 citizens.
Does New Rome really have that high of a crime rate index that they need that many cops? Don't kid yourself. They are there for one reason, to produce revenue for the village. And what other way do they have to create this revenue except for traffic violations. Does anyone know just how many of out of state cars are ticketed each year in this rat hole known as New Rome?
With the recent news that the last Mayor of New Rome not having been legitimately elected or appointed to office, I urge any and all citizens that were sentenced in Mayors court to reopen their case, and appeal the violation on grounds that the Mayor/Magistrate was not authorized to hear the case based upon his unofficial capacity in the seated office. I can imagine the US Supreme Court hearing these case.
New Rome is the laughing stock of our Nation, and gives the State of Ohio a black eye. After New Rome, Grovetucky doesn't seem so bad, does it?
If I can be of any further sevice, feel free to drop me an e-mail. I'll be more than happy to offer to all I can in support the lack of Justice in New Rome, Ohio.
Best of luck.
Jim says:
Thanks for your support! I always like hearing from Law Enforcement who speak out that New Rome is a scam. New Rome PD wouldn't know what to do if there was REAL CRIME going on. They would probably call the Franklin County Sheriff to do the work. All they know how to do is write tickets.
I have been following Dispatch stories about New Rome. I am an ex-mayor of a small village. You were right to complain. I am interested in the fact that the police chief and village administrator are one in the same. I feel by Ohio law that this is a conflict of interest. I believe that ORC deals with dual compatibility of co-mingling these two jobs. As a police officer Mr. Cunningham should know this. I have been following also State Auditor's news releases about the stealing of public funds. Some of very things that were in past audits of New Rome were similiar to things that I found when I took office. The auditor (State) is to blame for allowing this to go on for years and not blowing the whistle. Audits check minutes which (if they kept them) would show appointing and re-appointing without benefit of a real election. Most people don't understand the election process nor do they understand government. I find all this rather odd that the auditor uncovers theft in office, no one is charged and this goes on for a decade. Same thing went on in my small village year after year but nothing done.. People need to become more involved in their local government. My hat goes off to you! Good Luck to you!
Signed,
Ex-Mayor of another small corrupt community
PS, I tried to clean up what I could when I held
office. Policies set, monitoring Police logs, making the clerk and
village manager accountable for screw ups. I didn't run this last
year because my husband had enough of phone calls and no privacy in our
lives. I am still very active in my local political party...
Jim says:
From what I heard the money doesn't pay for all the work that goes into being a Village Mayor. I guess one could do it because they care about their Village that much, but finding honest people to help run the Village would just add the the stress. New Rome didn't have a bad idea of having a close knit council. They went wrong when they started running it like a business and not doing it for the good of the community.
HOODY HOO! HOODY HOO! CITIZENS ARAYEST! CITIZENS ARAYEST!
SKEETER
Jim says:
hahaha I pointed out that their sign was upside down when I pointed out that their speed limit sign was wrong. They fixed it when they fixed their other sign.
Jim says:
My case wasn't closed with New Rome since they had issued a warrant, but I didn't have any recourse since I had withdrawn my appeal. At least this is what I was lead to believe by all the lawyers I had talked to. At any rate I am moving on to bigger and better things. All the time and money I put into this will just make New Romes fall all the better.
Excellent idea for a web site. I heard about
it on the John Corby show. I live in Northwest Ohio, and am here
to tell you New Rome isn't the only place in Ohio that writes bogus tickets
or hassles people. West Millgrove, a small town north of Fostoria,
Ohio on State Route 199, loves to write tickets. The village police
department is staffed by wanna-be cops who are waiting to get hired by
a real department, or losers that made it through the Police Academy, but
can't get a job anywhere else. They sit on the edge of town, near
the 55 mph sign at the corporation limit, and shoot people as they are
accelerating out of town. An 'Officer' (and I use the term loosely)
tried to write me a ticket for doing 38 in a 35. No joke. They
also have a Mayor's Court. A friend's lawyer pretty much embarrassed
them and threatened to sue the village, after citing some legal jargon.
It was thrown out. Obviously West Millgrove needs to go to the 'New
Rome School of Screwing the Public for Fun and Profit'!!! I
have heard rumors that the cops there are told that if they want paid,
they need to make the village some money. Hmmmm.... sound familiar?
Bob
Jim says:
I know New Rome isn't the only one. I hope some people who live near these other little traps take this site as an example of a way to fight the system. Even if nothing happens to New Rome it's good to know I'm not the only one who hates them and will do everything I can to bring them down. Bringing attention to them is something they do not want!
I have a recommendation, though. Boycott.
Boycott Broad Street. Boycott every last business, from grocers to tattoo parlors.
Boycott the churches, too. Boycott the post office, the banks, the hospital.
Boycott.
Not everybody boycotted the Montgomery Bus Company at first, but after a few days, neither black nor white people rode the buses. It took one year and one day.
Don't march. Don't picket. Don't argue with the cops; just don't be there. Don't rent; don't eat; don't wash your clothes. Don't buy tires; don't buy gas. Don't drive any of their streets.
Believe me, the people who live in New Rome will get tired of being ticketed when they're the ONLY source of revenue.
Don't rent. Don't buy.
Anybody who runs any kind of business in New Rome, boycott them.
Don't get a $.10 copy made. Don't pick a penny
off the street. Don't buy flowers. Don't buy coney dogs. Don't buy alcohol.
Jim says:
I don't know that would work in this situation because people aren't convinced it's that serious of a problem. Until they are subjected to it. Plus I don't think the businesses support the NRPD. The NRPD could operate without any of the businesses there.
Jim says:
Well I did give in under the advice of my lawyer. But I'm not done by any means! Oh no! Paying them just makes it so I can go in their crap town and stir up more trouble! On foot of course, but I'm looking forward to it!
Jim says:
They are just money hungry bastards. I'm sure they didn't come to my house because they didn't know where I lived. The address on my license was old and the address on my car was old too. Phone number is in my roomies name. I'm sure they would have if they could have!
I work for the Westland Area Commission, who covers the area surrounding area. I'll wear the t-shirt to the next meeting and see if I can get themto buy! Jamie Mueller is on the commission too.
John
Jim says:
Oh man! I would love to be there!! I'd wear mine too! hahahaha Would be priceless.
Jim says:
I don't know if police need a reason or not any more. Of course, they can invent about anything. They can say they thought you were driving too fast or weaving or anything like that. Then there is New Rome who pulls you over and tickets you for stupid stuff.
-patsy-
Jim says:
Wouldn't it be great to see a lot of them go to jail for a while! Ahhhh...I would get lots of satisfaction.
I wanted to let you know that EVERYONE ticketed
in New Rome has the absolute right to request that their case be transferred
to Columbus. That is one thing that the former magistrate (Scott Shaw I
think was his name) made VERY CLEAR at the beginning of every court session.
I don't know if this has been made clear to people before Shaw's arrival
or after his dismissal. If not, then New Rome has another VERY SERIOUS
offense against them. Many people disliked the magistrate because he was
"associated" with New Rome, but I honestly think he was trying to make
things better. He certainly very
pointedly explained people's rights to them,
when they appeared before him at the Thursday night court. (I witnessed
that on a few occasions.) Anyways, if there is anyone out there with charges
pending, when you go to court tell them you want to transfer it to Columbus.
If they tell you that can't be done, POLITELY go along with them. Then
get an attorney (Mary Torian is an
excellent choice.) Make SURE you take someone
to New Rome court with you (as a witness), and if you can, get the names
and phone numbers of a couple people in court (that you don't know) in
case you need more witnesses.
Til next time!
Patsy
Jim says:
Thanks Patsy! My wife and I don't recall the new guy mentioning anything about being able to have your case transferred or I would have done it! Maybe that is why they fired Mr Shaw. He was there for justice. Couldn't have that!
Wouldn't it be something to setup a streaming camera and let your reader's watch live while they pull over car after car. Wonder if we could legally do that with out them being able to do anything about it. Id have to imagine so.
Love the web site looks like just a matter of time till they go down because its now getting the publicity it never has.
Steve
Jim says:
Set up a web cam at each end of the street and watch it all! Gee, maybe they should film an episode of COPS there. hahaha
Just wanted to send you an 'atta boy' for your achievements thus far. I've been following the site for the last week and you've definately got a lot more 'traffic'.
I lived in Columbus all my 29 years until moving to Spain thus I am very familiar with New Rome and have always avoided it. I keep in touch with home (Columbus will always be home) by reading up on the Internet. That's how I found your site. Looks to me like you've done pretty well considering Petro has moved the New Rome audit up by about 1 year.
I believe what you're doing is excellent and can be an inspiration to us all. This is not only about fighting the New Rome system but is about fighting injustice. Kinda like good vs. evil (If I used those little smiley face things I would insert one here).
Keep up the good work,
Jeremy
Sevilla, Spain
P.S. This is a story for The Other Paper! They
would do a great piece! I can just imagine the whole 'family' on the cover...
Jim says:
Thanks for your support Jeremy!
I thought about contacting The Other Paper, but haven't yet. Someone said if I get arrested I would make front page of it! That would be funny! The audit should be interesting to say the least. I still say we should start a Death Pool for New Rome. If their Traffic Trap gets shut down it won't take long!
Jim says:
hahahhaha! That is funny! Should make a "HONK if you hate New Rome" bumper sticker! That would be great.
Jim says:
Thanks for the information! That is good to know as I have driven up 23 there on many occasions. Of course I follow the posted speed, but like to go a little slower if they are that anal about it.
As soon as i can find all the paperwork,,,,i'll send you his story
Good luck again !!!!!!!!!!!
Kathy
Jim says:
Wow Kathy! That is great! I can't wait to see the details! Ahhhh to have a Lawyer as a friend. You can do just about anything!
I am researching interesting information about New Rome:
1. Scanner frequencies. Listen to the Corrupt-o-Cops yuck it up about their latest "pigeon" between mouthfuls of jelly donut.
FREQUENCY DESCRIPTION

453.9250 NEW ROME CITY

2. According to my research, there are 56 housing units in New Rome, and 16 of them are rentals. Are these owned by the corrupt "family"? I wonder if housing inspectors have checked these units? Perhaps a few calls to Judge Pfieifers' office? Ask old Stu Kaplow how he views slumlordism.

3. Here is a picture of the New Rome motel - the original and the updated. Woo hoo!
4. Complain about the New Rome Mayors Kangaroo Court! Contact the president of the Ohio Association of Mayor's Courts. Ms. Kaluger has worked hard to improve Mayor's Courts (many are good and legal). She has even mentioned New Rome as an "embarrassment" in past news articles (see this link http://www.ohiomayorscourtclerks.org/press.html).

5. New Rome features prominently at this site about SPEED TRAPS:

6. Read Jim Petro, Ohio Auditor's report about New Rome corruption. It smells! It stinks! It never gets better!
http://www.auditor.state.oh.us/news_releases/1998/n19980203.htm
7. Here are some stories from http://www.speedtrap.org/steoh2.htm. Hoo ha! See the bold faced tip!!!
New Rome Has been a speed trap on the west side of Columbus for years. I have personally had (3) tickets there One for going left of center according to the so called Police Officer (1) for making a rolling stop while the police officer was hiding behind a dumpster with all his lights out. and just recently I was pulled over for get this being too close to the curb and for not wearing my seatbelt. they always look for secondary reasons to give you a ticket. (2) times I have fought there charges after being found guilty in there Mayors Court, having them transferred to a Franklin County court where in both cases the officer who stopped me never showed. The reason is simple they lose the money if Iam found guilty in so whats the point! my fines you ask well they were quite High as expected my no seat belt ticket was 10 dollars higher than average at 60.00 instead of 50 and the fine for not carrying my liscense on me was 83.00 dollars. they do anything and everything to get you stopped and look for petty reasons to give you a ticket! avoid this section of Columbus if at all possible they will be waiting for you, so Beware!!!!!
------------
If you need a definition for a speed trap - here it is. There are a total of 60 residents in the village and there are 13 "police officers". The rule here is if you dont see the police with someone pulled over, look in your mirror - you are probably about to get pulled over. They are always there. Speed limit is 35. If you go 37 you better be looking out. Also, if you do get stopped, be prepared to be cited for anything there might be a law for - seat belt, tail lights, head lights, turn signals, lightly tinted windows, you will find out about traffic laws you didnt know existed and be fined for violating them in New Rome. They check out everything they can to extort a couple extra dollars. And then you'll have to go to their court (which consists of a movable trailer) and pay fines and court fees. And dont think you have to be speeding to be stopped. They run plates at random while you sit at the stop light and pull you over if its 12:01 AM and your registration expired at midnight.
------------
contrary to the ex-officer of New Rome this has been a speed trap for over 60 years, they do not need a reason to pull you over they make up one. I live nearby there are only 60 residents in this extremly small town, patrolled areas only consists of 5 streets.STAY AWAY if at all possible
------------
New Rome cops are waiting for the slightest movement. You are guaranteed to see one of them pulled off the side of the road waiting for anyone to go 1 mile over. I think the town of New rome is run off the income of pulling people over for petty reasons.
-----------
I am a New Rome Police Officer, the information
that you have obtained is inaccurate, our annual budget is different then
what you have it at, also we do not participate in the the act of pulling
individuals over for not having a seatbelt on, to let you know in the state
of Ohio it is not probable cause to pull a motorist over for not wearing
a seatbelt. Also you were talking about Powell Police Department, you wrote
that there officers were not that bright, and there quick to "pull there
guns" go pull the police reports about the shooting and the chase before
you start criticizing law enforcement, its public information. Also if
you don't know the type of equipment that they are using...call the dept.
they have to tell you. New Rome uses K-band radar.
-----------
Posted speed limit is 35mph. You slow down from a Columbus, OH speed limit of 45mph and spped back up to a county spped limit of 50mph -- slowing down for approximately 1/4 mile. You are likely to be stopped for ANY violation (speeding, no seatbelt, taillight out, obscured license plate, you name it) and brought to Mayor's court. New Rome has a population of about 200 people, $30,000 per year in property taxes, and over $300,000 per year in traffic fines. The consumate speed trap.

Jim says:
Wow! That's a lot of information! Sorry it took so long to post GC. I wasn't sure how I wanted to display it all. I'm going to add links from it to the Resources. Thanks a lot!
Jim says:
Way I see it, never bad talk people with guns! I can handle clubs, but guns are bad! Especially people who want to be in control like New Rome.
Have a great day dude!
patsy
Jim says:
I agree! We are usually taught that Police are our friends and are there to help us. Bad cops like New Rome causes us to dislike any Law Enforcement because they think they are just there to cause us trouble.
Jim says:
The thing I saw in their court made me sick! The people were nothing but weak and uninformed from what I could see. The court even mocked them buy offering to reduce anyone's fine by $5 dollars if they could answer a question on what the magistrate has just went over. Yeah it seems like fun and games, but it's a horrible insult to their intelligence! No real court would operate like that. Most of them were not prepared to answer to the charges against them by any means. It was very sad.
Jim says:
Thanks for your support! I hope something good comes from all this mess to. I don't know how the New Rome cops do that job either. I guess I have higher moral standards and know when what I am doing is wrong. If my job wanted me to do something that I felt was wrong, I would get a job somewhere else. I just don't get it.
Jim says:
Thanks for your support! I didn't understand that email either. They never replied to the mail I sent them back either so I am going to let sleeping dog lie. I don't know if they would try to stop people from changing to Franklin County. I know they didn't offer it as an option.

Jim says:
Thanks for your support! If you ever come down to Columbus I would advise not visiting New Rome for obvious reason. hehehe These small town governments for the most part are just horrible! Abuse of the law and theft at it's worse. What make it even more horrible is how they are overlooked! Don't get me wrong. I'm not against enforcing the law by any means. If you run a tight town and are all about enforcing the law then that's fine. The goons we hear about though use the law as an excuse to beat down, belittle, and rake us over the coals! Maybe something good, like an outside government agency that monitors law enforcement, will come out of New Romes demise.
Jim says:
Anyone wanting to do this, feel free! I personally wouldn't do that to any police. No need to draw attention to myself even if I haven't done anything wrong. Guess that's "The Bottoms" in me. heh
Danny
Jim says:
I think Galloway taking over New Rome is a great idea! That way the New Rome residents won't feel as though they are without name. Not to mention it's a good name! I mean come on! What do you think of when you think of Rome? Corrupt government crashing down. They were doomed to fail from the start.
I wish I could get this and many mails to Jamie!
KNEW ROME!
DISSOLVE THIS TOWN!
Jim says:
Very nice! I have made it the motto for
today! Thanks!
