Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving.  I'm sure with the Christmas shopping season upon us, the New Rome Police are out in force, so if you're shopping down that way please use our detour!  A couple new letters are up so check them out.

Where does the time go?  I've got a few new things to share with you.  Mike Mullen sent us a link to his website about the Summersville, WV Police Department . It's really well done and worth a look!  We also have received a couple letters from the mayor of Harrisburg that we feel should be posted.  Click here to read them.  Last, we got a very interesting letter that we posted to the Reader Support page.

I must say the mayor of  Harrisburg seems reasonable enough.  Only he can direct his police force to fairly enforce the law, and not turn his little village into another New Rome!  We've received an high amount of mail this week, so check out the TOW and Reader Support sections.  After weeks of quiet, we've received a rash of Alisa responses too!  Check back for updates!

7:28am - Hello everyone!  Long time no see!  We decided to give Michael a few days off since he has been working ever so hard.

Just wanted to pass along something we got from the Mayor of Harrisburg, Alvin L. Cox:

Just a quick note about Harrisburg and the new annexation of Rt. 62. The speed limit was 45 mph before we annexed. The Franklin County Sheriff, The
Pickaway County Sheriff and the State Highway Patrol have patrolled this stretch of road and written many citations trying to prevent accidents due
to the business area there. Why now is the public worried about Harrisburg patrolling the area. Harrisburg took in about $30,000.00 last year in fines
compared to New Rome's $400,000.00 and ours were mostly speed. If we still allow the 10 mile over then doesn't this tell you some people have no regard
for other peoples safety. The gentleman and other people that call us Little New Rome need to grow up and get a life.

Thanks for writing in Mayor.  We really enjoy to hear from the public officials on such cases.  I haven't followed the Harrisburg issue and can only draw my conclusions based on the information from the article and what you have said.  Please give us the facts about Harrisburg such as the population, income breakdown, services offered to the public, etc and we will let the readers decide for themselves.

Thanks to several readers for pointing it out: We finally get a full story from the Dispatch on the brewing residence debate in New Rome.  Seems that Connie Tucker, clerk and treasurer, is going to the Board of Elections complaining about the residency of 20 of New Rome's 59 registered voters.  She does have a point, seeing that the 2000 census only put 42 adults in the village.  Read more here , registration required.

Please check out our political endorsements .  We hope you find them informative.  We'd also like to again thank Rep. Larry Wolpert, the state representative from Ohio's 29th district, which includes New Rome.  He has introduced HB644 which would allow the state legislature to eliminiate villages like New Rome under certain circumstances.  I received a e-mail from Mr. Wolpert's office stating there will likely not be any activity on this bill for the remainder of the year.

Also, we'd like to thank a reader, John for this article on speeding tickets, insurance rates, and what you can do about them.  Thanks John!

Thanks to John for pointing this story out to us.  It seems that the Harrisburg town council seems a little shy about their recent decision to lower the speed limit on Rt. 62 as it runs through the village.  One village resident is calling Harriburg a "Little New Rome". One could conclude they're trying to "construct" a speed trap. Click here to read the rest.

I need some help!  I heard there was an article in one of the community newspapers that said an audit by the board of elections has been called since there are SIXTY people registered to vote in New Rome...when the last census only counted 42 adults.  If anyone can provide more details on this, please send it in!

Has it really been this long since we've updated?  Not much going on.  Jim had an interview with the New York Times a few days ago!  We're eagerly anticipating the article and can't wait to post it.  Another thing sent in by Laura was a letter to the editor by a Prairie Twp. resident that basically stated that they "didn't want New Rome".  I hadn't thought of that angle, but who could blame them?

We'd ike to thank the wannabe hackers that keep attempting to send old viruses to our e-mail accounts.  You're wasting your time.  Our mail server automatically strips viruses and delivers nothing but a text file with the virus information.  Further, we're running full firewall and antivirus systems on the PCs used to update this site, so please give it up.  Thanks.

Here's an open letter by Laura to the residents of New Rome:

I wanted to point out to the actual residents of New Rome, that we do not
have a grudge against you personally. Our battle is with the abusive police
department and the corrupt "old-school" council. We have no beef against
the homeowners and residents themselves, who are not part of the system.

I also wanted to point out some of the BENEFITS  that the residents would
reap, should they choose to dissolve the village:

1) You would receive municipal services that you do not currently
have.  Examples:
          - Round the clock police protection (I mean actual police
            PROTECTION, not just ticket-writing)
          - A decent court house
          - SIDEWALKS!

2) As homeowners, the value of your homes would increase greatly. The
surrounding areas would grow and prosper if people were not so afraid to
drive through New Rome. This would result in increased business
investment, and a general improvement of the area. This would drive up
     property values.

3) Increased property values would mean increased equity in your home,
and a better return on your investment.

4) You could experience PRIDE in your hometown, instead of the stigma
and shame that goes along with New Rome's name.

5) We would stop marching though the village.

6) People would stop making fun of you.

I urge you to consider these benefits, when this issue does get on the
voting ballot..

Regards,
Laura

We still haven't heard from Kelly.   Here's an older article that I just found.  It has some good stats about New Rome.  To those who think it's just a speed trap, during the course of a year, only 14% of tickets issued were for speeding.  NRPD evidently shows creativity in finding obscure ordinance infractions, that make colorful citations.  I can just hear them in their meetings "now, just remember if a license plate isn't PRISTINE, it's illegal...."

Thanks to John for sending this in...a woman was featured on Channel 6 the other night, angry over an arrest this week by New Rome.  She says they wrongly booked her, claiming she didn't pay a ticket from '96.  See pictures and read more details here.

Kelly, if you're checking the site, please write in we'd love to hear your full Tale of Woe!

I like the sound of this bill: Legislation would allow dissolving of villages .  I think one way or another, the movement to eliminate villages like New Rome is unstoppable.

Hey!  We're still here...there's just not a lot going on.  A couple minor updates to the Alisa and Reader Support pages.

Today I am reminded how thankful I am that we live in a country that encourages free speech.

Here's a picture sent in by a reader of a glorious sight.  We can only hope that come February we see both of New Rome's Crown Vics along with the Trailer of Injustice hauled away to auction.

So much to cover.  This Week News did two stories on the meeting the other night.   Voters Will Decide Village's Fate and Elections Board Appoints Frazier . The Dispatch's coverage is here.

And now for some fun!  We had to dig out the New Rome Lover Alert for this one...

We have a special treat courtesy of New Rome resident Alisa who sent the entire New Rome Sucks crew e-mails last night all with the same basic tired cry "if you ain't breaking da law you ain't got nuttin to worry about in New Rome."  We all know that's simply not the case...but let's present the dialogue....
